"Positives start and end with the staff being friendly. We entered our room to find two feral pigeons. The window had been left open by staff. The managers response fails to mention that. The window in the next room was also open. Given the rooms are hot with no air conditioning one can see why. When I went to reception to report this the offer was to remove the pigeons. There was no offer to clean made by staff at any time. When I was told the pigeons would be removed I said we would not accept the room as it would need a deep clean. No member of staff offered this even then. We were instead shown a small top floor twin that was uncomfortably hot but this was the only room available. I would never write a review when someone else in my party has as it unfairly boosts or lessons an establishments rating for the same visit but the managers response to the below review is simply untrue. Had the manager taken the time to be available during our stay, even when we asked for them on the Monday, they might have been more accurate in their response."

The Ancient Gatehouse & Rugantino Restaurant ★★★

"I loved the surroundings of this hotel. It's a truly medieval setting. There's a monastery right outside the entrance, which you can visit and is truly spectacular. There's also a castle-like ancient building surrounded by a moat with swans. The stairs to the rooms are quite interesting. Breakfast is made to order and is delicious. It includes bread, sausage, and scrambled eggs, as well as bacon and black pudding. Parking is available right outside the entrance. We arrived at 9 PM and left at 10:00 AM the next day. There was no charge for this time. If I were to visit Wells again, I would choose this hotel again. Thank you for your warm hospitality! It made you feel right at home."

"Lovely pub country pub , friendly staff . Different ales to try . The food was lovely , i had a steak bagette, and my husband had scampi and chips. Apparently, the chips were good , and they must have been as he ate the lot busy on a Friday. It's definitely worth the stop if you are in the area ."
