"We booked Hotel Barren Guttenan last-minute after our original accommodation cancelled. Big mistake. • Toilet & Bathroom Situation is a Joke: One shared WC across 6–7 rooms, with a motion sensor light that switches off every 30 seconds—enjoy doing a full squat-wiggle just to stay illuminated. The shared bathroom doesn’t drain properly either. Unhygienic and unacceptable. • Underhand restaurant scam: Charged 4 CHF for an extra plate to share a bowl of soup. Then, 3 of us ordered the 3.50 CHF spring roll starter (which we pointed to when ordering on the menu), yet we were charged 22.50 CHF for the vegetarian main course instead. The waitress flat-out refused to acknowledge her mistake—each of us forced to pay 19 CHF extra EACH. Disgraceful. • Overpriced Water Scam: 13 CHF for a bottle of still water… only to discover it was 1.30 CHF at the shop next door. • Flies Everywhere: Inside, outside, at breakfast, dinner—constant buzzing companions. • Noise Hell: Rooms (21–24) are above the bar and restaurant—every sound echoes through the floorboards. Plus, paper-thin single-pane windows let in all road noise. On top of that, a bell tower chimes every 30 minutes, even through the night. Sleep is impossible. • Appalling Value for Money: We paid 1,088 CHF (~£1,015) for 5 rooms with shared bathroom over 2 nights. Had we known it was just one single WC and one single shower to be shared on the whole floor between 6-7 rooms (potentially 10-14 people) we wouldn’t have booked. Easily the worst accommodation we’ve ever stayed in. • Breakfast = Embarrassment: Sparse choice—just a couple of croissants, bread, ham, cheese, and yoghurt. Not worth crawling out of bed for. We only ended up here because of a cancellation, and regret not doing more research. I wish previous reviewers had been more honest—we wouldn’t have touched this place with a barge pole. DO NOT RECOMMEND. You’ve been warned."

"We stayed here for two nights whilst trekking the Via Alpina route. We were very pleasantly surprised at the level of accommodation, our room was large and airy, well furnished with the most comfortable bed and, unusually, tea and coffee making facilities. The reception staff were very pleasant and helpful and breakfast was plentiful and varied, taken in a very grand dining room. The hotel is a beautifully preserved example of the old fin de siecle hotels once inhabited by the well to do of europe. Many interesting artefacts and pictures. We weren't able to eat evening meal here as the hotel only caters for large groups but that wasn't a problem as there are plenty of restaurants in Meiringen. Well worth a stay and close to the Sherlock Holmes museum which is also well worth a visit."

"Fremragende beliggenhed og stor ophold!Hotellet har en perfekt beliggenhed, med smukke udsigter over bjergene og dalen fra alle værelser.Værelserne er rummelige og komfortabele, med store balkoner, hvor du virkelig kan nyde scenen. Gratis parkering er en stor fordel.Skiliften er beliggende lige over for hotellet, som er yderst bekvemt.Skipasser kan også købes på receptionen, hvilket gør alt nemt og smidigt. Generelt var der et meget behageligt sted at bo. Vi kunne virkelig nyde vores tid her og ville være glade for at vende tilbage."

The room and hotel in general is super clean, the room is comfortable and comes with some extras like fruit and Toblerone bites, the breakfast is wonderful, the location is spot-on next to the railway station. Very good communication by email before the stay, including a guest card."
