"What a beautiful serene boutique hotel in Matera, This small bespoke cave hotel in the Sassi area of Matera was a wonderful find. Our room was so beautifully curated with stylish accessories. The bed was very comfortable the shower was powerful . The suite was equipped with a luxurious bath with high end products to enjoy. The breakfast was a good mix of breads, fruits yoghurts, cheese and sweet treats with delicious coffee which could be enjoyed indoors in a beautifully lit cave or outdoors enjoying the magnificent views over Matera. The staff were were both charming and helpful. This was definitely a highlight of our trip,"

"There are lots of features that make this hotel a great choice in Matera. First, we really enjoyed our room which had a superb view and was suitably atmospheric. We appreciated the interesting configuration of the hotel, which is really an interconnected complex of ancient buildings. There are outdoor seating areas scattered throughout for different vantage points on the spectacular views of Matera. The front desk staff was very helpful and friendly and responded instantly to WhatsApp messages. We were without dinner reservations for one night, and the restaurant they recommended was a highlight of our trip."

"Dirty rooftop terrace (bird droppings) and non-functional jacuzzi (turned into a bird bath). Room key incident: The key broke in the lock without us forcing it. The hotelier called a locksmith for a cost of 25 euros. He asked us to pay this amount, which we refused as it was a problem with the key and not damage caused by us. Unauthorized charge to our credit card: The day after our departure, 152 euros were charged to our credit card without our consent (using the imprint taken during the reservation). The hotelier did not inform us of this charge. Lack of communication and professionalism: When we contacted him to express our dissatisfaction, he stated that he was entitled to charge this amount "in accordance with Italian law." He then stopped responding to our messages when we asked him for documentation for our insurance. Comment: This event ruined our stay in Matera. We absolutely do not recommend this hotel. The lack of cleanliness, technical problems, deplorable customer service and the questionable practices of the hotelier are unacceptable."

"We chose this lovely spot to spend New Year’s Eve, and it was simply fantastic! Even before we arrived, we were already impressed by Francesco’s excellent service, taking great care of our arrival. Throughout our stay, he gave us wonderful tips and helped us with every detail. The place is beautiful, with a wonderful and comfortable room inside a cave. We noticed the care in each and every detail: candles, cozy heating, a delightful shower, and a very comfortable bed. Not to mention the abundant and delicious breakfast, along with Valeria’s kind and attentive service. We highly recommend it!"

"This is a truly tranquil hotel. The beds are extremely comfortable and the surroundings very relaxing. Breakfast is leisurely, sumptuous and exquisitely executed. We had 4 nights here and I’d thoroughly recommend slowing down and spending that little while longer to simply enjoy. From a functional aspect the shuttle to the parking is convenient and it is a very well run parking lot. This hotel is fantastic as a base for any stay in Matera."

"The Vatera Matera hotel was opened just over a year ago and was eight years in the making. This cave hotel does indeed have windows in the rooms unlike others in the Sassi area. Vatera Matera gets high marks from us for professional staff, decor, services, and rooms. We were very pleased with all aspects.
