"There’s a special kind of richness in Fukahoritei that has nothing to do with chandeliers or show; it’s the kind that comes from space, silence, and intention. The rooms are classic Japanese—tatami underfoot, shoji light, clean lines and air to breathe. That beautiful minimalism makes every little thing feel precious: a teacup, a view of green, a breeze that taps the washi screen. It’s richer than any cluttered grandeur because nothing gets between you and the moment. Morning arrives like a gentle play: the soft orchestra of insects, the old rooster’s wake-up call, getting older with each year I go visit him yet still young enough to run around his elderly hens, and the rustle of leaves. I padded outside to the coop, let the hens out to warm themselves in the sun, scattered a little feed, and picked a handful of tender greens. For fun, I played them a bit of Baroque music—and whether Bach approved or not, the hens did; they gifted me two warm, fresh eggs. It’s hard to imagine a kinder start to a day. The onsen here is the kind you remember in your skin: silky, faintly oily mineral water that slides over you like a veil, leaving everything soft, buoyant, and new. It has that rare “elixir” feel—soothing any travel ache and lending the complexion a quiet glow. Step out and you move differently, as if the bath pressed a reset button. Dinner is an ode to Kyushu’s abundance and craft. Course after course arrives with clarity and confidence—sweet crab, delicacies like soft-shell turtle, translucent blowfish sashimi, luscious Imari wagyu that practically melts on the tongue, and more seasonal surprises. It’s refined without stiffness, generous without excess—omakase as storytelling. Breakfast keeps the poetry going (those eggs have a say). What ties it all together is the kindness of the people here—unfussy, attentive, genuinely warm. You feel looked after, not managed. There are tasteful souvenirs and small keepsakes that carry the house’s spirit, so a little of Fukahoritei can travel home with you. If your idea of luxury is **room to exhale, water that heals, food that sings, and small joys that feel personal**, then this is your place. Hostel Ilfaro Kurume

"I planned my travel itinerary like this: Fukuoka City - Kurume - Hita - Fukuoka City, and Kurume was the goat. The location of the accommodation was right in front of the station, so it was very convenient, and there were a lot of nearby supermarkets, Daiso, Don Quixote, 7-Eleven, restaurants, bars, karaoke, etc., so it was very convenient ㅠㅠ There was always a staff member at the front desk, so it was easy to get help, and even when I had to go outside to make a phone call or have a quick meal, I had to take my card key to the common area, which was inconvenient, but the facilities were really, really, really good, really the best.. The pajamas were so comfortable, the mattress was so comfortable, the pillows were so comfortable, and honestly, I paid more for a hotel in Hita than this hostel, but Kurume Hostel is incomparably better. It's not a hostel, it's just a small hotel. The facilities are really, really, really good. The staff were so kind, so I felt so good. This is probably the most memorable place in my trip to Japan 😭 Taiho Ramen is the best ramen I've ever had in my life. You have to go!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have to go to the park nearby!!!"
