"I have used the restaurant for many years and it was always the highlight of a sailing trip to France. Because of Covid I had not been there for three years. We booked at lunchtime for dinner at 8pm but they told us we would have to eat outside. However our booking was found and we moved indoors. The service was very slow. The first course was fine but when our main course arrived my duck was only lukewarm as was a friends. It was also tough. Another friend had beef skewers. He could not cut it off the skewer and managed to eat one piece. When I complained, the waitress said she would tell the kitchen but no action was taken. Overall, the meal took over three hours and it seemed to us that the professionalism of the staff was sadly lacking. La Regence is now off my list of favourite restaurants in Cherbourg."

Hôtel Mercure Cherbourg Centre Port

"The room was really lovely, we had a prestige family suite with balcony and great views. Fast check-in and check-out so perfect for ferry travel- 5 mins from port. Comfy beds, lovely sheets and a wonderful shower. The stay was let down by the restaurant and staff for us. We opted to dine in the evening before our ferry as we wanted a quick and simple option. The waitress came across rude and we were advised we had to order all courses at the start of the meal. This was frustrating as we didn’t know if we would want a desert at the end! Several meals were wrong- we ordered 4 steaks and all were cooked and labelled with a different level of ‘done’ than we had selected. One dish completely different to what had been requested and confirmed. One steak inedible as very fatty with lumps of gristle. We are English but ordered using the French title as the menu, and pointed to confirm which dish was desired. Orders were not as described- muscles came with no cream, raspberry missing from the mojito etc, just frustrating to not get what you order. During a 3.5hr dining experience we were not asked once if we wanted any drinks. We asked ourselves on several occasions. We spent over £300 and it wasn’t the good experience we would expect (and usually get) in Mercure hotels. There was no milk in our rooms for coffee so we asked at Reception and the host simply shrugged and said she didn’t have any. We asked at the bar and we’re told there was no milk. I asked a different waitress after dinner and she offered a jug to take up to the room."

Ibis Cherbourg la Glacerie

"Ibis now seem to have a 3 tier system of hotel standards, this being the middle one. Having spent the previous night in the upper type room, this was definitely not as good – but it was around 15% cheaper so not unexpected. We asked for a quiet room and got it. Enough room for luggage and occupants, a kettle and paper cups provided with tea bags and coffee sachets. Everything clean though and a comfy bed with decent bedding ensured a good nights sleep. A decent overnight stop that’s not too hard on the pocket."
