The first owner, a tea merchant surnamed Gu from Shantang Street, purchased this plot and built the courtyard residence. With a history of nearly 300 years, he laid the foundation of the five-entry compound, defined its courtyard layout and dug the ancient well, and the place has been known as "Gu Mansion" ever since. The Gu clan of Suzhou ranks among the four great scholarly clans in the Jiangnan region, renowned for valuing education and literary heritage for generations.
