To put our review into perspective, this is our 3rd visit to Egypt on AI. We have previously been to the Steigenberger golf resort makadi bay and the sunrise Tucana makadi bay. Both were exemplary in every aspect with a real quality feel and were at the same sort of price as the Sheraton. What we booked. We used TUI and selected the Superior Double room with lagoon view and terrace/balcony. Transfer time from the hotel was about 50 mins and the return was over 90 mins. I would consider a pre booked taxi (bookable on the TUI app) certainly for the return to the airport. Check in was quick and easy (remember to have a paper copy of your holiday confirmation). We were told that we had been given on upgrade to a room with a Super King bed, which wasn’t quite true as all superior doubles have these beds. The room. Room 6104. A great location, 2 mins to the beach and 2 mins to the bar/ restaurant. Nice and quite with a good sized terrace with loungers (ideal for late afternoon). Our room had been renovated and was a good size and well decorated. The complementary mini bar was soft drinks only. We had considered a ‘Sea View’ room upgrade, but many of these seem to have their views blocked by numerous palm trees, so glad we didn’t pay to upgrade. The resort. El Gouna is a secure resort with many hotels, all within easy reach of the town and marina. We walked to both from the hotel (20 mins) and quite liked the marina with its bars and restaurants. The hotel. A large complex with beautiful gardens and lagoons. Lots of walkways that looked particularly good at night when lit. There are a couple of pools (one heated) that seemed overcrowded even though the hotel wasn’t overly busy. The beach was very nice. Comfy loungers with wind breaks and a bar and toilets close by. We spent most days on the beach as it was quite and there was plenty to see with the boats and kite surfers. Restaurants. There are 4. The main one which is buffet style, 2 a la carte and one on the beach. Main restaurant. Open for breakfast, dinner and lunch. Themed evenings gave some variety, but the quality of the food was below expectation with food being cold on more than one occasion. Plenty of seating but again the hotel wasn’t busy when we stayed. Best meal was breakfast in our opinion. Orient 1001. Evenings only. This isn’t an Asian restaurant. It’s Egyptian with the food, service and atmosphere being excellent and and well worth a visit. It is honestly head and shoulders above everything else in the hotel. So my one and only real rant. We tried to book this restaurant at reception, only to be told the 1st availability was for the evening of the day we were leaving!! This ticked a few boxes and we almost had a stand up row with the receptionist who was adamant that we could not eat there (having had a less than average meal in the main restaurant the evening before). So 15 minutes later and having asked for the GM, we got our booking. Not what you would expec
