Comfort Suites Grand Rapids South

I would not recommend this hotel! I'm very surprised by the high ratings. Custom service wasn't even mediocre. Front desk called my room at 9:45 p.m. asking for me to vccome down and complete vehicle information that they neglected to gather at the 5 p.m. arrival. Pool was cold and dirty. Sauna and hot tub were closed (permanently?). Room was average but not very clean. Safe didn't work because of batteries. Breakfast was sufficient. More like a $60 per night place, not $109!

The staff was friendly, but upon arrival, had to wait for her appearance. Then, I wanted to look at the fitness room before we went upstairs, but I couldn't open the door. I went back to the empty front deck, the walked around to track her down, and received the comment that "they have been having problems with the door"!!! I asked about trying to work out in the morning, only to hear the "there is always someone at the desk! REALLY?!?? I couldn't find her when I wanted! Everything else was fine. In the morning, they jimmied the door to the fitness room so no key was required.

There are better options nearby. I stayed the night before in Home2 Suites and it was head and shoulders above, for only $25 more. Definitely worth the difference in price! Not the hotel's fault, but guests here were also very loud in the hallway all night and Mary Jane had definitely paid a visit.

Overall the hotel was fine. Very disappointed the hot tub is boarded over, the pool and sauna were both closed. Pool reopened by check out, but it was too late to enjoy. So much for amenities. Breakfast was typical for a hotel hot breakfast and the attendant was very helpful. There is no housekeeping unless requested. My complaint was at check in. We had gift cards to use for half our bill and after 1.5 hours on the phone with various agents and Sophia at the front desk calling franchisee services, we were unable to use them. What business is unable to apply a gift card to your balance and change you the remaining cost?! It was appalling. I even spoke with the manager Cassandra who couldn't help me. Our whopping consolation was some bonus points.

When we woke up in the morning my son was complaining about bug bites on his arm and legs. My husband and I pulled back the sheets and found 3 flat, round bugs that we googled and they were definitely bed bugs. Beware!

We found bed bugs at this location. Front desk was notified. Management called me days later to deny that they have bed bugs. Denial is not going to treat the problem. I am disgusted. Staying at this hotel has been an expensive experience.

The motel is just south of Grand Rapids and relatively easy to find. There are restaurants nearby, but not within walking distance. The lobby was clean, well maintained and cutely decorated for Halloween. The staff was very pleasant and very helpful. Our room was an adequate size. We were 3 doors from the elevator and the ice machine and never heard any noise. The heat/ac worked well and was quiet. The suite had a comfortable love seat, a bench for suitcases as well as a luggage rack, a microwave and fridge. The TV had lots of channels. The beds were extremely comfortable. The bathroom was large with the sink inside so there was lots of counter space for toiletries. The breakfast room was large and had lots of tables. Breakfast consisted of all the usual items such as cereal, bread, yogurt, etc, as well as scrambled eggs, sausage and waffles. The breakfast lady was constantly cleaning tables and refilling food.

This hotel looks nice, and in all reality, isn't a bad place to spend a night. It is overpriced, but generally clean. If you stay a few days, you find that management is rude, argumentative, and unreasonable. My family were actually homeless from January to May while trying to get into their new home. They stayed here as it was close to work and school. Instead of being treated like "guests," they were treated like pariahs. They were at work and school all day, and the children are quiet and well-behaved. Front desk staff complained about them having bedding washed and eating the breakfast sandwiches ("They are eating our food!"-direct quote from female front desk staff). And how many of those can you eat? After the first couple of weeks, they didn't eat them at all. And isn't breakfast included in the price you pay to stay at a hotel??. Staff also hid condiments and hot chocolate mix from them. When I went in to talk about a discrepancy in the billing, I was treated so rudely that I burst into tears. Manager and female front desk worker REFUSED to look at my credit card print out and even TRY to explain to me how they were billing. It took multiple calls to Choice Hotels to get it figured out. By the way, if you complain about anything, the manager will turn on you in a heartbeat and will tell you that he "has no boss." So, keep your complaints to yourself because nothing is going to change. Instead of being kind and understanding about my family's stressful situation, they were antagonistic-acting as though paying guests were somehow imposing on them. It was bizarre to say the least. Management and front desk staff are incapable of self-reflection, and will blame the guests if they have an issue. BTW, many of the staff were friendly and kind. They showed they cared about the family, but that is all I will say so not to get them in trouble. I couldn't believe that they never even comped them a night, or gave them a better discount-they were homeless with children. When they couldn't take it anymore, they moved over to the Quality Inn across the street (another bad place). Comfort Suites manager actually called over there and "warned" the manager about my family. I can't recommend this place based on principle.

We were here for just one night with the kiddos. We were going to Michigan Adventure the next day and there weren't a ton of hotels cheaply priced, so we decided to stay in the Grand Rapids area. I wanted a place with a pool, and we were very happy with the pool area. Water was a bit cold, but it had a clean bathroom attached, towels just for the pool and a clean shower in the pool area. For a few kiddos that wanted to swim for a few hours, it was perfect. Oh and the pool was opened late too, which was great. Our kid are up late. It was open only for adults 11-midnight, so who knows what goes on in there from 11-midnight... but being open to 11 for kids helped make the evening much easier when trying to plan a dinner out too. The room was big. Two beds and a couch. Clean and ready when we arrived. I couldn't get the TV to work, it just seemed stuck on HDMI1 with no signal, but I wasn't planning on watching anything anyway. I was just poking around with it. I didn't call for help. Breakfast was good and most important... the breakfast area was very large. No fighting for tables. We slept well and it was exactly what we wanted.
