Shelter Harbor Inn

A poorly lit room with a clogged drain and broken room safe, but that’s not so unbearable. The moment we entered the room, we were overpowered by the perfume from the plugged in (air freshener) aerator. Shortly after, we knew why. The mold in the closet was overwhelming. Upon discussions with the front desk and maintenance personnel, I came to learn, mold is a problem in many, if not all the rooms! Our friends suffered the same problem in their rooms. Terrible! I’m home and still coughing. On a positive note, the restaurant, front desk and maintenance staff were warm, attentive and truly were lovely.

The Shelter Harbor in has the makings of place that could be very nice, but has enough shortcomings where I wouldn’t choose to stay there again. The location is decent, just off of the main road and about a 15 minute drive from downtown Westerly. Private shelter harbor beach shuttle was closed, but I think we drove to it and it was lovely. Staff was super friendly. Bedding was very comfortable. Bathroom was a good size and was well stocked with Gilcrist and Soames bath products. Room had a fancy Marshall Bluetooth speaker which was cool looking but seemed very unnecessary (especially since the walls are thin). My biggest drawbacks are the following: the thickness of the walls - very thin - you can hear when the main door opens and shuts. I believe the spa area was above our room and you could hear any time someone walked upstairs in the attic. It’s an old building, I get it, but it’s less comfortable when every noise is amplified like it is. They seem to be understaffed - they don’t provide daily housekeeping. Breakfast is included but is lackluster with lousy coffee and no egg options. This is not the first review that mentions these, so it’s something the hotel knows about and has made a business decision to leave the way it is. When spending $300-400 per night, I had higher expectations than this.

Writing for my son and his (now) fiancé. He proposed last weekend in Narragansett and booked dinner and a room at the Shelter Harbor Inn for that evening. He made dinner reservations and requested a vegan option for his girlfriend. Not only did the staff accommodate this request, they went above and beyond; they left notes in the reservation so everyone knew they were celebrating an engagement. They called us after dinner and said how wonderful everything and everyone was. Every staff member congratulated them; the chef made a special dish and custom dessert for her. They received champagne for a toast and because it was available, an upgraded room. They said the food was delicious and the property was lovely, but it was really the staff who made it extra special for them.

The 1800 farmhouse inn was beautifully decorated for the holidays. The staff is friendly and helpful. We recommend the room with a fireplace and balcony, Downtown Westerly is only a few minutes away, as are a number of great restaurants and conveniences.

We had an amazing experience hosting our wedding at Shelter Harbor Inn on October 12th, 2023. Paula and her team's expertise and guidance were invaluable throughout the entire planning process. Their attention to every detail ensured that everything ran seamlessly. My husband and I could truly relax and savor every moment, knowing that they had everything under control. The food was exceptional, and the service made everyone feel well-catered to and cared for. I highly recommend to anyone to host their event at Shelter Harbor Inn!

Arrived late, around 8PM, person asked for credit card, gave a key and sheet with info. No niceties, no offer to help in any way with bags or location of the barn (separate building - very dark outside), where to park, activities for the next day. ZIPO. On the sheet it told about breakfast and to call if you need anything. No info about going to the beach (they provide a shuttle), no info about using the bikes. The breakfast was gross! Really bad, especially for it being in a high rated restaurant. They offered packaged artificial muffins, egg salad (weird) could just give a hard boiled egg, packaged yogurt, packaged egg bites and a strudel of some sort. I had to ask if they had a serving fork or something. Looked at me like I'm crazy. We went out to breakfast at Junk and Java - so good. The room literally had a bed, no chair to sit on nothing, and it was very dirty. I'll add photos. We told them we'd like to speak to a manager and not surprised no one called us. They people there don't like their jobs.

Reasons we loved it here: 1) Received text from a real person that we could check in early 2) Same person who texted made us a dinner reservation 3) Asked for a bon fire, and 5 mins later it was made 4) Free 10 min shuttle to private beach (towels and chairs included) This was a last minute find, and we loved every second of it. Super old buildings, renovated, and decorated crazy cool.

We stayed for one night. Rooms were a good size and recently renovated. There was a musty smell but once we shut off the fan off for the AC it seemed to go away. Hotel front desk is very pleasant. We did eat at the restaurant and the food was ok.

We received an email about a wine dinner at the Shelter Harbor Inn, and decided that it would be a nice getaway after two years of isolation We live nearby, but decided to spend the night as well. (Six plus glasses of wine at the reception and with dinner.) We were upgraded to a beautiful room. King sized bed was so comfortable, and the sheets were like silk. There was a large deck overlooking the gardens which were just coming into bloom. Staff was polished and professional. The front desk called to say I had left my blazer in the closet. I asked if they would ship it to me, and offered my credit card to pay. They would not hear of it. That is service! The wine dinner was absolutely exquisite, and the chef approachable. Many of our fellow diners said that the Inn was "down on its heels" for the past few years, but has come back brilliantly under new ownership/management. Have been to many, many inns over the years and this "Continental Breakfast" was extraordinary. Much more than coffee, juice and packages muffins! (With our aging knees, we did wish there were rooms on lower levels.) Such a lovely time.
