Visited for a two night stay in February on the Dine and Unwind package. This includes two nights B&B and a three course dinner on the first night. The checking in experience was really easy and the staff were super helpful with local knowledge and dining reservations etc. We had a four poster room in the old part of the hotel which was spacious and clean but could do with some tlc. The included dinner was lovely with free choice of the whole menu. Breakfast was a full hot and cold buffet with optional freshly cooked hot choice from the menu. The staff cannot be commended highly enough. All super friendly, helpful and happy to chat. Quick shout out to Cathu, Cory, Kyle, Jelena and Leeroy. Would highly recommend this hotel for location, staff and food! I’d definitely return. Loved Wells.

The worst hotel room we have ever stayed in and for a price of £190. Firstly the staff were all very nice, but.... We arrived at around 3.30pm on a Saturday for one night. We were told on arrival that we could only have breakfast at 7 to 7.30 Sunday morning or after 10am because the big group had fully booked all other times. Brcause we said we couldn't do those times the duty manager did offer us a saussge or bacon sandwich delivered to our room, which we had. Our room was room 8. Room 8 was up two flights of stairs, it was like a crows nest with windows on three walls, there was a queen bed, in front of the bed was a lovely bath tub, which looked great but was totally inpractical as there was no other shower, just ensuite toilet and wash basin. There was a very narrow bench seat running under the main window, no other seating, not one chair or desk. When night fell the room was cold with so many windows. The bed was far too firm and I woke with a terrible back the next morning, my wife a day after now having back pains. On checking out at 9am the big group were boarding their coach and the breakfast restaurant had two tables in use the rest was empty. I think the charge over twenty quid for breakfast, I hope somebody had a good fill on ours! We were visiting my mother who lives in a retirement home nearby, our daughter and her partner stayed down the road for half the price and had an excellent room plus a nice breakfast. We will never stay there again, awful place!

A very homely and comfortable hotel. The central location is perfect for access to the shops, restaurants Cathedral and Bishops Palace. The terrace across the road was perfect for afternoon and evening drinks. There is limited parking access, which is explained when booking. We ended up parking in one of the public car parks about 400m away, paying about £10 per day. The staff are exceptional, with a particular shout out to Cathii, Elaine and David in the breakfast area. The breakfast choices are comprehensive and well presented. Our double room was very clean and well appointed.

Overall, this hotel is lovely and in a great location near the cathedral. The room was clean, albeit a little tired, and the facilities were good with kettle, coffee machine, and iron and ironing board. Four of us dined in the restaurant that evening with the meals being good, accept the burger which I can only say was incinerated and the wait for our food was unacceptable at well over an hour although our waiter did keep apologising. We were told that there would be roadworks on the Sunday and we were advised to move our cars, so I moved my car at 07:30 as these works were meant to start at 08:00. After parking Mr car at Waitrose at a cost of £6.50 we noticed a sign at the end of the road say the works would start on the 30th May, 3 days later. The hotel was good but certain things could be improved.

Hotel with long history. Pleasantly quirky in parts. Service excellent and room great, albeit bathroom up a flight of stairs. Well organised self-service breakfast with options for ordered items. Excellent view of the cathedral from the massive Cathedral View room.

We enjoyed our one night stay here. The staff were helpful and welcoming. The meals were of good quality and Barbara, our waitress, was brilliant. Just one star off for a few minor concerns. Our classic room was clean and comfy but badly needed a refurb and two lights were not working. We had to wait quite a while for our evening meal, as a party of sixteen arrived later, but the staff apologised profusely. All in all, a good central place to stay.

I'm unsure how this hotel has managed to get to a 4 star rating. I don't know how to describe my experience at the swan as it was a mixture of very good yet very bad! The good.. the breakfast and bar service was great. There is a gorgeous outside area opposite the front where you can sit and take in the view of the breathtaking cathedral. The average... the fixtures, fittings and fabrics of this hotel are gorgeous... but so poorly maintained. Attention to detail on cleanliness is missing. Dust accumulated in places that they can't be bothered to clean. Our room quite frankly was appalling. I appreciate it's an older style building, the wonky floors, rattly windows and ill fitting doors you can't do much about, but the standard the room is maintained you can. (See images) With the restaurant slap bang to the reception, unfortunately the first smell you get as you enter the hotel is whatever people are eating at that time of day, not a lovely aromatic perfume! Mixed feelings about the swan, it could be SO much better.

Fabulous hotel with a great location. Staff were all helpful, friendly and knowledgeable of the area. Food was amazing and would highly recommend a stay here. Room was clean, spacious and had a coffee machine as well as kettle and instant coffee.

I have stayed at the Swan when it was a Best Western and returned to it several times. In booking the room on line this time I relied on the photographs as I could not recall the room category that I had stayed in, and enjoyed, last time. I booked an entry level classic room. The room we were given was much smaller than the photograph suggests and starting to look a little tired. This was not too much of a problem as it was clean and had everything we needed for a one night stay. However the heating was on and even after turning it off and opening a window the room was too hot for a comfortable nights sleep. The mattress was quite firm which is not my personal choice and there was an unpleasant smell eminating from the bathroom. It is due to my resulting poor nights sleep that I give this only three stars. Also the bathroom was looking in need of modernisation. I do not want to dissuade anyone from staying here. I would consider staying again but only if I called in advance to make sure that one of the rooms where I had previously stayed was available. The hotel is in an excellent location. It is clean and fairly well appointed and the few staff that I came into contact were pleasant. Interestingly I see that the Hotels website is now stating that it is undergoing refurbishment in May. Hopefully that will bring it back to having the high standard that I recall from previously staying.

This is a lovely, old building with beautiful , original features. The staff on reception and at the bar are very friendly and welcoming. The rooms are well equipped, with toiletries and tea/ coffee making facilities. Plenty of storage space , ample power sockets and good lighting. Well placed tv, if that’s what you want. Unfortunately, the day we stayed , there was a wedding. The car park was full, so had to pay to park locally, there was a 3 hour maximum stay, so had to return to the car to park elsewhere. We were offered a breakfast slot , but only if we ate at 7 or 7:30, a little early for us on a day off, so declined. On returning to the hotel, the wedding reception was in full flow. We had received an email saying they do hold events which may result in “ some noise disturbance though we will always try and keep this to a minimum. ” Our room was booming. The music echoed & vibrated , shaking even our toilet, as well as our beds, in fact-everything. We spoke to reception, but all rooms were booked. We had to close our windows- and the room was so hot. This made no difference to the noise. ( it is a very old building and I understand that double glazing isn’t possible). There is a fan provided, but not alot of difference made. I woke up very sweaty and uncomfortable. Eventually, the music stopped, but then the light from the corridor came in through the door frame. The ‘stand by’ on the tv kept flashing green and red, I turned it off at the wall in the end. So not a good nights sleep at all. I truly believe that this is a lovely hotel, with alot of positives, but unfortunately for us, it was a huge , sleepless disappointment.

Do not book this hotel if you want to sleep. We have booked this hotel for a lovely evening away, and to our surprise there was a wedding. Our room was located above the wedding disco, with music booming and shaking our bedroom floor & bed! We were not notified of this wedding (we would have booked elsewhere having been told this would be the case), and that the music stays on at full volume until 12. This was no fault of the wedding party, but the fault of the hotel. Extremely disappointed. If you want to sleep in the evening, do not risk booking this hotel. We were offered no other room/alternative. Surely using any logic, they would put the wedding guests above the extremely loud music so other hotel guests could stay elsewhere and be able to sleep! Felt like I was in a 1* all inclusive hotel in Benidorm with this ridiculous noise. Book elsewhere.
