INTRODUCTION - Asprey? Classical music is playing. A central modern spartan hotel (1990). I wrote two separate emails stating that I would like to look at several rooms upon arrival, and received "We will do what we can to accommodate your wishes" as a written reply. I keep control at all times. Still, the receptionist now refuses, citing that “she herself” thinks all rooms look the same. It takes several precious minutes to explain that I meant it and want to see more rooms, as people can perceive rooms differently. Continued questioning. I point out that a double room facing the street may have a different noise level and feel than one facing the food court and walk away. I keep a tight rein, showing nothing. She reacts. It went in. She calls me back and announces that I could look at a room, but the balance is disrupted. Thoughts and impulses pass with violent speed, gaze kept steady. I calmly accept. A new career in a new town. An empty space on a wall. Duchamp? Ball? Klee? I take inventory of what just happened. Its influence on my thoughts. Crucial! Picabia? Standard double, August. no refrigerator, No telephone, no teletext with full weather report, no wake up call, no safe, no lobby computer. No lotion! Poor choice. I use my own. A charming space. Check-out at 12 noon. Staying here for the location and breakfast experience. Homemade mixed red berries. On point! INTERIOR DECORATION The room. Less decoration? More. Welcomed by the computer screen TV on the wall. Browsing menus. Welcome message efficient and without warmth. Note; give some praise. CK Be? No! Strong lighting in the barren room, bright reading lights. Three cold fluorescent light sources. I could say I feel admiration. A wake-up call is ordered and arranged after I have programmed it on the room's TV twice with no response, even though it signaled that the function was switched on. Perfect self-control. Staff will have to knock on the door. This is becoming more and more common in hotels. Design over function can be the right choice in the right circumstances. There is space enough for a Mondrian? Bresson? Russolo? The right business card makes all the difference. Holding it up. Marinetti? Ball? A bathroom. It's completely empty. There is nothing there. Rituals? DENOUEMENT Night. Or evening. Walking the floors and corridors. Sounds behind doors. The heat penetrates. Alone. But only temporarily. My palm against a door. Against another door. Further down the corridor, a young woman comes out of the lift, walks a few steps and tries the fire escape. I catch her eye and smile. Excellent. We both smile. There’s no exit. It will be all right now. Rand! Definitely Rand! /P. B. SLEEP QUALITY 5
