My husband and I, along with our two grown daughters, absolutely loved our four-night stay at the Zanzibar Palace Hotel. Instead of staying in a cookie-cutter hotel with dozens of other travelers, we enjoyed the charm of this ancient merchant house, its tranquility, location and wonderful staff. Daniela runs a wonderful operation. We opted for their reasonably priced airport pick-up service that brought us straight to the hotel in the narrow streets of Stone Town. The rooms were as charming as they appear in the pictures. (The stairs were not a problem for us – but it would be an issue for someone with mobility issues.) I loved that we were “in the city” and not near a bunch of large tourist hotels. I also appreciated the hands-on lovely service by the staff – notably Roderick and Lulu. At one point, Roderick personally accompanied me to a nearby pharmacy so that I could get proper medication for an allergic reaction. You can tell that the staff is like a “family” – and that they appreciate one another. We started each morning with free coffee or tea delivered to our room, followed by a delicious breakfast (served by Elizabeth and another wonderful friendly staff member) in the dining area. On the first day, we simply enjoyed walking around Stone Town and seeing some of the sights and sounds of this fascinating city. We also walked around the neighboring streets at night to find restaurants and shops. We later signed up with Daniela and Roderick to take a walking tour of the city (highly recommend, especially the slave market), as well as two customized day-trips where we could explore the northern part of the island (Spice Tour, Portuguese ruins, beach) as well as the southern portion of the island. The Jozani forest tour was amazing. All of the reasonably-priced tours allowed us to tour as a family -- and not with a large group. We appreciated having the opportunity to see and experience areas other than the beach resorts. Daniela also facilitated our taking the ferry (and, upon her recommendation, paid for the slightly higher business class) over to Dar Es Salaam at the end of our stay. I would absolutely stay again at the Zanzibar Palace Hotel and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys boutique hotels. Many thanks to Daniela and her wonderful team.
