The Highland Center Hrauneyjar

Room was ok but breakfast included, WHAT BREAKFAST. IT WAS SERVED 7AM UNTIL 10.30AM. We got there at 9.15 and there was nothing to eat except the last remains of a end bit of bread. 3 slices of ham, cheese that even the mice would run from. No bowls. The girl behind the counter was to busy playing hide and seek with us. £242 for one night.

It's the only hotel in the area so there's little competition unless you want to spend hours driving in order to go hiking. Its origins as a place for workers to live while working on nearby dams shows-rooms are small, and plain. Plan on eating there for dinner and breakfast. And paying dearly for any coffee or snacks that you purchase. Dinner service was slow, but you served yourself from the buffet for breakfast. Their packed lunch was generous with sandwiches, fruit, drinkable yogurt, juice, and a candy bar. The heat would not turn on in the first room I was assigned so they changed my room which turned out to be larger (a bonus because there was minimal space between the bed and walls in the first room).

The Highland Center Hrauneyjar is a nice guesthouse that is a base for lots of nice trips. From there our group went to Landmannalaugar the next day. We arrived here after a visit to the beautiful waterfalls at Gjain.

this is what $400 a night gets you: a small room with windows that don't open (ventilation slots on each side of the window are not covered by mesh and welcome insects), a fairly comfortable bed, an ancient looking bathroom with a damaged shower tub and no soap in the dispenser; a cold breakfast that is the saddest of affairs (not even butter!)

Good place to stay if you want to go off the beaten path. The hotel is located at the end of you can call the civilized south of Iceland. If you want to go to i.e. Landmannalaugar this place is a good start. However, the prices are somewhat excessive for the value. The hotel is clean, but not in very well shape. In the hallways the lighting comes off the wall and in our room there were several damages that seemed like a quick fix. The breakfast is fine, nothing special.

Dorm-style rooms, small, but clean, quiet and safe, the bed was comfortable enough. They have you wear shoe coverings when you come in and provide slippers in the room to wear around the place. There's only hot water for approximately 7 minutes, then takes about a half hour or so to reheat for more hot water. There's a gas station right in front in the parking lot of the hotel which was perfect! There's enough parking for all cars. The only reason why this place can charge such high prices and people willing to pay such high prices is because there's no other hotel or any other competition around. It's definitely a dorm-style type of lodging. Breakfast was all cold items- lunch deli meats, deli cheese, veggies, breads, yogurt, cereal, etc. Location is great as it is approximately a 1 hour drive to landmannalaugar. The front desk people were nice. The room was also warm, the heater was wonderful and did heat up the room nicely. Overall the prices are definitely too high for a dorm-style place, but the location/easy access to landannalaugar is really the only reason why you would stay there.
