Notes on the Bamboo Cottage in Ludao
This is a factory building constructed in 1957, featuring an architectural style akin to a traditional Chinese quadrangle courtyard. It has served as a bamboo strip factory, a watch dial factory, and an aluminum product factory in succession.
With the nation's vigorous guidance and promotion of the construction of a service-oriented society, the consumer market is thriving. The potential of cultural, sports, entertainment, tourism, and leisure has been increasing year by year, becoming an important engine of consumption growth. Under the support and guidance of policies, this old factory building has been transformed into a modern guesthouse, providing leisure, entertainment, and accommodation for tourists from all over.
The hotel is located in the bustling and noisy Zhongshan Road area of Xiamen, yet it is tucked away among the narrow alleys. Despite occasional noises from street vendors and passersby, it maintains a serene and calm atmosphere. The two-story complex has been transformed into a four-entry courtyard. A new corridor has been added around the central courtyard on the second floor. The first floor is divided into a front courtyard, a welcome lobby, a central courtyard, a breakfast area (coffee shop), an executive lounge (meeting room), a gym, guest rooms, and a laundry room.
The second floor is primarily designated for guest rooms, while the rooftop features a meditation platform, a Tai Chi area, and other facilities for visitors to engage in morning exercises and classes.
The building was formerly a bamboo strip factory, hence the imagery of "bamboo" has become a pervasive expression element in the guesthouse. The front courtyard is named "Bamboo Garden", inspired by an ancient painting featuring bamboo and stones. There are eaves tiles and a garden lamp hanging above the entrance. The Bamboo Garden exudes a fresh and elegant charm, providing a rare haven of tranquility for weary travelers. In addition to simple registration, front desk, and luggage storage, the welcome hall also offers tea and refreshing drinks, as well as a waiting area for children to play. The gift gallery within the waiting area displays local intangible cultural heritage products such as Jian ware, lacquer wire carvings, and Fujian tea. The waiting area is enclosed by bamboo railings, a traditional architectural element from southern Fujian, providing a concrete representation of the market scene with its corrugated tiles and thatched roofs. It is worth mentioning that there are three exposed hooked concrete beams on the ceiling in the center of the hall, large and mottled, with an ancient and rustic charm. These beams were left intact without any decoration when the building was completed. Under the beams, there are several strings of small white gourds, symbolizing good wishes for life.
The welcome hall leads to the atrium courtyard, which is named "Bamboo Courtyard". The backdrop of the Bamboo Courtyard is a facade inspired by the architectural style of ancient houses in southern Fujian, featuring stone lattice windows and swallow-tail roofs. The courtyard is paved with black stones, with fine grooves on the surface, which imitate the shape of unfolded bamboo slips, an ancient writing medium. Courtyard lights are placed at the four corners, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere at night. The long-standing and profound Chinese civilization is showcased, and the heavy historical burden carried by contemporary humanistic spirit is carried forward. From the Bamboo Courtyard, one can reach various functional areas in all directions. Returning to the starting point and looking at the entire guesthouse, the builder has expressed in a simple and restrained manner the natural, elegant, and culturally rich temperament of a contemporary guesthouse. From the Bamboo Courtyard to the welcome hall, then to the Bamboo Courtyard again, and finally to various functional areas, it seamlessly completes a spatial narrative of the Eastern aesthetics of initiation, continuation, transformation, and conclusion, quietly telling the story of the past, present, and future.
From time to time, elegant gatherings, calligraphy and painting exhibitions, appreciation of Jian ware and rare stones, and tea tasting events will be held here. This aims to engage more people in these refined activities, enriching their quality of life while enhancing our enthusiasm for culture and art. It also elevates the added value created by the hotel, which perhaps embodies the significance of the current "hotel plus" concept.
A homestay is not merely a container for lodging, but also a place where one's soul can find solace.
