The Oxenham Arms Hotel Devon

This place has been on my list to vist for ages and I wasn't dissapointed on arriving. The village itself is quaint and quintessential Devon, the Pub is easy to find and on going inside I recieved a warm welcome right away. The host found me a table in the bar to eat and was happy for me to have a look around to take photos. I had specifically visited to see the ancient Menhir, which the monks incorporated into their later building. There is also a Roman Pillar support in another room. The place really is a delight, with so much history both to see and learn about . Back in the bar I had a nice pint of jail ale and a pie. The food was delicious, well presented and good value. I will definately be back to this hidden gem, it would be amazing to stay here for a night or two, especially as there's lots to see and do in the superb, surrounding area. Thankyou to all the staff for making a lone traveller feel so at home and welcome. I will return!!!

This was our fourth visit and it was as perfect as ever. Our bedroom was beautifully decorated and had the most comfortable four-poster bed you could wish for. The bath towels are exceptionally large and soft. There are many walks and places of interest to visit from here. The hosts, Simon and Lyn, are so welcoming and pay great attention to every detail to ensure a perfect stay. The staff are excellent too. John, Graham and Ellie who served us in the restaurant, were hard-working as well as having great personalities. Vicky and Sue kept everywhere spotlessly clean. The chefs, Geoff and Dean, are outstanding and so creative. I enjoyed a delicious salmon pave with gnocchi and smoked mussels so much, which is quite an achievement as I dislike gnocchi and mussels, that I had it again another evening! 😀 We are always happy to tip the well-deserving staff here but are very glad that an automatic service charge is not applied as it sadly is in many establishments now. We look forward to our fifth visit.

Fantastic hotel find and all descriptions were spot on and the staff and owners were absolutely first class . The food was very good and everything was great value will use the hotel again on our next visit down south Bob , Judy , Anita and Robin

We booked a Sunday lunch here and were delighted to find we had been allocated a cosy table by the open fire. We were hungry and looking forward to a roast beef lunch. The lunch looked lovely when it arrived but unfortunately it was quite cold. We were surprised as it was only 12:30pm so not even towards the end of lunchtime. We informed the staff who quickly apologised and took our meals away. 10 minutes later the same plates of food were returned to us after being obliterated in either a microwave or very hot oven. The gravy was congealed and the Yorkshire's were ruined & extremely crispy. We ate the meals as we were hungry but we advised the staff on being asked if everything was alright after we had finished. Again they apologised and reassured us that our comments would be passed back. On leaving we were charged full price for everything with nothing being mentioned at all as if everything had been fine. Sadly we will not be returning.

came to eat here with my family for it’s so called “tapas” night. started the meal off being welcomed into a dark cold room as the staff had not yet turned the light on or lit the fire even though we arrived on time to our booking. as there was a large group of us we decided to order one of everything off the menu, later to find out this would be our biggest mistake. cold tasteless under seasoned food, the cherry on top was the raw rice from the so called paella. as we were greatly disappointed we decided to speak to the owner to voice our opinion and was greeted with the rudest reply possible. she did not care for what we had to say and was straight on the defence demanding that her food was up to her standards but clearly not up to anyone else’s. they then proceeded to light the fire and gas out the entire room with smoke leading to a family member having to leave the room as it was triggering asthma. as i clearly couldn’t have a civilised conversation with the wife i decided to try and speak to the husband. to no ones surprise he was just as vile as the wife except this time he decided to use force to get us to leave the property by pushing me out of the room. i asked for him not to touch me and his response was “i didn’t” even though my entire family was witness. as you can imagine we were so disgusted by human behaviour at this point we left the premises. do not eat here or stay here unless you would like to be assaulted.

What a wonderful place! Even if it were just the history it would make a compelling stay. I tell my American friends about the fact it is built around stones that are 1000 years older than Stonehenge and the building has been there for nearly 900 years and they want to go. On top of that the staff/owners are lovely and breakfast was yummy. Not easy for anyone with a disability, as I have because the floors are uneven (note age) and the stairs are steep. But if you get past that it is still worth it. Off the beaten track, quirky, full of character. Lovely place. You need to visit.
