Markree Castle

We got lucky and secured a room at Markree Castle (often fully booked by larger groups) for one night as part of a business/golfing swing through western Ireland. The Castle was a delight. One interesting room after another, very comfortable bedroom and a nice bar- where we joined a wonderful group of talented Canadians and their Irish relations for drinks and music. Thanks to their family and to the staff of Markree Castle for a terrific experience!

The hotel might only have four stars but the staff are five stars. Also I’ve stayed in significantly worse five star hotels so go figure! We were there for a wedding and it was pictures perfect. Staff were fantastic, food was lovely, gardens were pristine, and the dance floor was a hit!

16 years since we have been to the Markree and it still felt like going home! Refurbishments have been done very sympathetically and the addition of the Irish wolf hound puppy was a nice touch. Our receptionist was great always had time to help and was a mind of information on the history of the castle. All in all another memorable stay.

I really enjoyed our visit to Markree Castle. It was wonderfully authentic. I felt I had stepped back in time. It had the feel of a film set but it is most definitely not. The castle and the grounds are beautiful. The staff are so nice, pleasant and helpful. Our bedroom was spacious, clean, comfortable with a great view of the grounds. We had an evening meal and breakfast, both excellent. The castle even has 'Fionn' an Irish Wolfhound 4 month old pup, who was taking all the attention given by guests in his stride. Would definitely recommend a visit. Perfect for a wedding.

Markree Castle is a unique experience. From the moment you arrive you feel like you are in a genuine castle. Having an excellent dinner in the beautifully restored dining room looking out on manicured gardens is magical. The staff are welcoming and very friendly.
