Mirbeau Inn & Spa - Skaneateles

3.5 - My husband and I had a 2 night, 3 day mid-week getaway at Mirbeau in June. Overall, we had a very relaxing experience. Rooms - we had a king room with a garden view on the first floor. It was spacious with a seating area next to a fireplace. There was a claw foot tub and a separate shower. Not a huge fan of having a shower curtain. As others have mentioned the paint and lighting in the rooms make it quite dark and, the dark color on the ceiling made it feel closed in. The dark colors are also a stark contrast to the lush gardens outside. The sliding glass doors opened onto an outdoor area shared with a few other rooms. There was a bistro set near the pond and we were able to enjoy breakfast there. We saw all the koi, ducks/birds, bunnies and frogs. The area is lovely but some areas could use some weeding. Spa - the spa dressing rooms are well appointed. There are changing areas, rest rooms, showers, lockers, a sauna and a steam room. They have ice cold washcloths, towels, ice water, every toiletry you might need, hairdryers and even a swimsuit dryer. The quiet room has several reclining beds where you can rest, read, sleep, wait for a treatment. They surround a foot bath where you sit on cushions on the floor. There's ice water and hot tea available. White noise machines drown out most noise creating a peaceful atmosphere. The aqua terrace is just outside. It has an oversized hot tub area, a seating area with four cushioned chairs around a fireplace, several other table and chair groupings and a bar. The hot tub is nice, very relaxing after a massage or class. It's not a very large area overall, and we did have trouble finding a seat one of the days. On hot days, it would be nice to have a cooler pool area or a cold plunge pool. Treatments - we had a couples massage, something we have done many times at other spas. My husband had a wonderful experience with his massage. She focused on his problem areas and did a wonderful job. My massage was quite the opposite. It did not seem like a professional massage. I spent about 90% of the time on my stomach which became quite uncomfortable. The massuese was rough and parts of the experience were painful. After the massage when we went to settle up and have everything billed to our room, we had to stand in line for a half hour. The attendant was clearly new and overwhelmed. We did express that we had a mixed review on our treatment. At first, we were charged double, but eventually, after my husband went back to the desk later, the error was corrected and, we were given a small percentage off the treatment. I did email the spa manager at the encouragement of the staff, but received no reply. Dining - we had 1 room service breakfast, 1 breakfast and 1 lunch in the dining room on the porch. Anniversary trip...33rd year...and we could not have picked a better place. With the pond and lush greenery all about and gentle music all around it feels like you have been transported to a peaceful retreat.We had 4 nights..and enjoyed the spa for facials and pedicures. The lounge and restaurant are both marvelous...great breakfast...inventive cocktails and superb food. The town is close and is charming and welcoming. First time in the Finger Lake region..and it is well worth a visit. Highly recommend Mirbeau for couples...rooms are spacious and spotless and the entire staff is just marvelous. Treat yourself to a special vacation here...you will not be disappointed.

I stayed with my daughter for my birthday, 2 nights. With prices like this, one should not leave stressed. But we did. Staff - restaurant, housekeeping, gardeners, spa - were lovely, with the exception of one front deck person, who was most decidedly not. The grounds are lovely. The birthday dinner, with the wonderful Julianna at the reception desk & Liz as server, was top notch. So were the blood orange martinis. Breakfast was only okay, with avocado “toast” not toasted & with no offer of more than one cup of the very expensive coffee. The inn’s “system” was new (installed in May) and had many bugs, from online reservation snafus to duplicative statements and missing receipts. I had apology after apology from multiple staff about it. I had no return emails from May to August - a front desk person told me General Manager Richard Malcolm was not good at returning them and would have her own manager contact me, which didn’t happen. The rooms are dark and it was hard to find things - basic things like light switches. Fortunately I had my iPhone flashlight and also called the front desk a few times for help. One of those times, so frustrated, when I told the person at the other end I was going to drink heavily at dinner, she laughed. Wrong move, even though I know she thought it was funny - an “I’m so sorry” could’ve helped. The “Lofti” device in my room had multiple intrigriging functions, but despite an info sheet, was very frustrating to work, and I’m supposedly really good at tech. I finally unplugged it. We left hours early. The front desk checkout experience left a final bad taste in our mouth. That particular young woman needs in depth customer service training. We just had to get away. We did stop at a local diner in the country for breakfast on the way home and it was great.
