I've visited Sibson Hotel before and loved it, but since then there have been several changes, most notable is the change of ownership. Apparently the new owner has several factories and an award winning pie in his portfolio, but success there does not mean success in the hospitality industry. We arrived on Friday afternoon and were warmly greeted by Brett. Having accessed the room, there was an odd musty smell which we put down to a very old building with probably no damp course and the heating only just on. Happy to say the smell did abate. We wanted a freshen up and discovered 2 hand towels, but no bath towels. Brett quickly rectified this, but it was obvious that housekeeping hadn't rechecked the room since cleaning from the last occupant as there were several cobwebs and flies about. We also had an issue on the following day, our dirty mugs were left waiting to be collected by housekeeping when they replenished the complimentary tea and coffee sachets, but left no fresh ones. Sam quickly rectified this, but it was such a simple simple small thing which makes me question the quantity of the housekeeping team. Dinner was excellent, although the menu was limited in choice, the aforementioned pies, plus burgers, fishcakes, salads etc. Kris looked after us at dinner both nights and was rushed off his feet as the restaurant was quite busy. He was extremely friendly and we had a good banter about the Malteser cheesecake (good, but not as good as mine!) The bed was comfortable, and we slept well, we could hear the A1 traffic, as we had the window open, but it's unavoidable as the hotel is so near the road. Can't understand people who moan about this! You can't plonk the hotel in the next field!! The cooked breakfast was excellent, plenty of toast, yoghurt etc to accompany it. But there was one thing that really p*****d me off, and that was a hotel guest who seemed to think the hotel was his "home from home" He helped himself from the bar ( he did pay for the drinks, but because there was only one member of staff and they were stretched so thinly there was often no one on the bar) and entered the kitchen during service with his tables used dirty plates etc. In my professional life these are no no's due to licensing laws, hygiene laws and insurance. We thought he was the owner! I really enjoyed my stay, the staff were helpful and friendly, and keen to put things right where they could, and the food excellent, but there is a lack of overall senior management presence, which, I believe would tighten up the areas of slack, such as the housekeeping and maintenance.
