Peponi Hotel

A fantastic hotel with lots of character located in Shela just south of Lamu. The staff were welcoming, friendly and very good. We ate there 3 nights and the food was the best we had in Kenya, a very good and long menu, catch your own fish and they will turn it into sashimi, ceviche or even a curry! Shela is a great village just outside the back of the hotel and walkable. If you want to explore Lamu town, you can get a guide from the hotel for 2,500 KSH and walk the town for 3 hours. Transfers to and from the airport included and welcome drink on arrival is refreshing after a journey. Look forward to returning to the Peponi and would highly recommend, we do wish we stayed longer once we had left!

Fantastic hotel with amazing ocean views and room only feet away from the beach. Felt very welcome from the moment we got there and the service and meals were all-round very good. They also did great work immersing us in the beautiful culture of Lamu and happy to see that they work closely with the local community there. Hope to be back very soon!

Its a really great place to stay. The staff is exceptionally friendly and go out of your way to make you feel at home. The food was so good. Please try the biryani and mahamri! Lots of warmth, kindness, homeliness at Peponi. Strongly recommend

The service was exceptional from the moment they picked us from the airport until the moment they dropped us back off. The staff and food were fantastic. We had the Top room which had an amazing view. I will definitely come back again and again.

Peponi has something quite elusive and rare in travel, which is difficult to describe. All of the hotel staff and the owners really care which creates a wonderful old school charm, while still keeping a modern buzz to it. The food and drinks were wonderful and well priced - I normally bore of a hotel menu but never at Peponi. The hotel has good relationships with the local tour guides so guests are well looked after, and the dhow captains frequently pop into the bar for a drink and chat. As a solo traveller, the hotel had a very sociable atmosphere, and it was easy to fall into conversations with other guests at the bar and pool. I don’t think the hotel would be for everyone as the rooms are simple with no air con, although there’s a real charm to the simplicity. There’s a lot of building work in the village behind the hotel (which didn’t create any disruption at the hotel) so I just hope Lamu doesn’t change too quickly!

It was my second time back to Peponi in a year and I loved every minute of it. There are few establishments in the world that can top this enclave of elegance, authenticity and personalized hospitality, where guests from around the world and locals sit side by side to watch the sun set and share tales of the day whilst listening to the lapping of the water. The food is fantastic (fresh fish that doesn’t get better), as are the views and location - right on the beach, yet next to the village - but it is the service and personal attention of both staff and management, that makes this hotel truly special. Each guest is welcomed and attended to in a way that few hotels can achieve today. The Korschen Family has truly built an institution that rivals the great hotels of the world but without the pomp and ceremony that usually go with that label. Without a doubt, my absolute favourite place to rest and rejuvenate!
