While every review of Akelarre already highlights the breathtaking beauty of the resort—the striking architecture, stunning views of the Bay of Biscay, and the intimate luxury of a small number of suites—I want to echo that this property is truly exceptional in every way. But what really sets Akelarre apart is the level of personalized, world-class service that goes far beyond even five-star expectations. From the moment we arrived, the concierge team was always available, incredibly responsive, and genuinely warm. Every staff member seemed to know us by name and made us feel completely at home. It's rare to find service this intuitive and consistent. A standout moment came on the first day of our stay, during what turned out to be one of the worst power outages in Spain and Portugal's history. Remarkably, we didn't even notice—the hotel’s private backup generator kept everything running smoothly. But when the staff tried to confirm our lunch reservation and taxi, they couldn’t get through to any vendors due to the blackout. Without missing a beat, Lucie graciously offered to drive us to the restaurant in her own car. She walked us in, explained the situation to the staff, and didn't leave until we were seated with wine and appetizers. That level of care and thoughtfulness is rare and deeply appreciated. It turned an unexpected hiccup into a memory we'll treasure. We came here for a special occasion—our 40th birthdays and our anniversary—and left feeling like we’d been guests in someone’s home. Akelarre is more than just a luxury hotel; it’s a place where every detail is intentional, and every guest is treated like family. Could not recommend more highly. We can’t wait to return.

Our experience at Akelarre was absolutely perfect. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and outstanding professionalism. The room offered a breathtaking view of the ocean, with comfort and elegance that exceeded all our expectations. The dinner at Bistrot Oteiza was the cherry on top. Each dish was a true tribute to Basque cuisine, combining authenticity and creativity. The impeccable service and the welcoming atmosphere of the bistro made this evening truly memorable. A big thank you to the entire team for making our stay so special. We will definitely be back!

RACIST!!!!I had high expectations when I visited this hotel, but my experience was overshadowed by behavior that felt unwelcoming and discriminatory. Upon arrival, I needed to use the restroom and politely asked for directions. Instead of providing assistance, I was asked, “Are you staying at the hotel?” in a tone that felt unnecessary and accusatory. Later, during our meal, the sommelier’s “Ciro” behavior left much to be desired. Unlike other tables, where he took time to explain and introduce the wines, he barely acknowledged us. When I inquired about the wine we had ordered, his curt response was, “I thought the waiter already told you,” accompanied by an eye roll. This dismissive attitude was in stark contrast to the attentive service provided to other diners. For an establishment of this caliber, I expected inclusive, professional, and respectful treatment. Instead, I left feeling deeply disappointed and unwelcome. A Michelin rating should not only reflect the quality of food but also the quality of service and respect for all guests.

Great modern and high end hotel right outside of town. Beautiful sea views and an excellent staff. Food was delicious.

We loved our time at Akelarre and hope to return. The location and the views are spectacular. The hotel staff were very professional and thoughtful -- helping us to plan activities in the area. The hotel design and overall aesthetic is beautiful including the rooms. We ate at the hotel several times -- the service and food were outstanding with many options of regional food and fresh/local ingredients.
