Sombra del Agua

This is the place I wanted to stay since I started planning my trip to San Cristobal, it has plenty of amenities, the place has a luxurious feeling at an affordable price. It’s clean very well maintained with privacy on its rooms and very attentive personnel. The restaurant is one of the top rated in town.

This is a tranquil place to stay, especially the courtyard. When one is on a trip, visiting and travelling from places to places; it is wonderful to take a relaxing break in the courtyard. The hotel staffs are pleasant and very helpful. You can arrange day trips with the hotel staff. My only suggestion to the hotel management is contract with a better-quality tour company. Here comes the best part of this hotel. It has restaurant Tarumba. Chef Jorge is a gastronomic magician, no exaggeration. So good, it can't be express in words. We have been to many places in Mexico, including Mexico City many times. On this trip, we have meals in other San Christobal restaurants during our stay. The end result is there is no point to try any more other restaurants. So, we decided having our last two dinners in here. In addition, Cristina and Victoria were very attentive and patient with our broken Spanish. Nevertheless, we became friends. Opps, how can I forget to mention Antonio; always gave my wife a bit more wine! We shall be back.

We initially booked two nights at Sombra del Agua but ended up extending our stay to five nights due to the outstanding service we received. The hotel’s location is perfect, and the rooms are spacious, clean, and beautifully designed. A special shout-out to the restaurant Tarumba staff: Carlos and Andrea made every meal a delight with their attentive and friendly service. Chef Jorge, your food is nothing short of exquisite—we savored every bite! We had a special dinner on September 29th for my wife’s birthday, and Carlos made sure it was an unforgettable experience. Axel and the staft from the front desk were incredibly helpful, ensuring a smooth check-in and providing great recommendations throughout our stay. And lastly, thanks to Eugenio, the parking lot guard, for his vigilance—he saved us from a potential battery issue by letting us know we left the headlights on. Thank you, Sombra del Agua, for making our stay so memorable. We can’t wait to return!

Never visit this place it is very beautiful but the service is horrible the manager Carolina Reyes was very rude and when I tried to talk to her she humiliated and yelled at her employee the manager's service was terrible and the staff was treated badly.

Everything was almost ready when I arrived, a tiny mistake on the room, but I ended up with a better room with limited noise the place was amazing, but try not to book a room facing the street as it can become noisy at night. The staff went out of their way, spoke decent English and were very helpful to show me how to get to places that I wanted to see and experience. The price for the room was very good for a solo traveller, and was within walking distance to many of the places that I wanted to explore

I travel frequently and was fortunate to book this hotel for four nights. I’m so glad I did! The service is beyond compare and it is so obvious that this hotel concentrates on the little things that make your stay memorable. We were in suite #2 that has a spectacular view and was spacious, a comfortable bed, a wonderful sitting area AND its own private terrace. This hotel is in a great location and very walkable to the sights and great shopping and other restaurants. The staff is exceptionally friendly and accommodating and go above and beyond to make your stay perfect in every way. The hotel is quaint and the dinners we had at the restaurant were some of the best I’ve ever had. We did the private chef dinner with seven courses and were treated to very special food with a variety of flavors —all prepared perfectly. Toya, their guest relations specialist is also a gem! Doing all those little things to make your stay memorable. The wait staff are all fantastic and see to your every need with a smile. I will only stay at this hotel when next I visit and highly recommend you do as well!

Don't get me wrong, the hotel is gorgeous. The dining/lounging area in the central courtyard is particularly beautiful. Plenty of plants. And the rooms are decent, though a bit small. The restaurant has good food and the location is superb: you're smack in the middle of San Cristobal's historic downtown. Most staff we interacted with was friendly and helpful. However our experience was tarnished by 2 non-trivial issues: 1. The streets surrounding the property can get loud at night, especially on weekends. And from what I could gather, all rooms face out into the street. There's a fair amount of noise coming from inside the hotel too (they even have this jungle-bird soundscape on 24hrs a day for some reason) So don't expect premium quality sleep. 2. But most annoying of all was the way they handled our reservation. We travelled to San Cristobal with 2 other couples, each had their own room. And we were shocked to find that each one of us was charged differently, even though we all booked the same room, same dates, through their reservation phone service (and none of us paid a discount rate). When we questioned the staff at the reception we were told it was due to pricing algorithms which determine prices according to season and demand. After further inquiry they told us it had to do with party size (1 vs 2 people in a king-size double room). The worst part is we ended up paying more (considerably more) than our friend because we booked earlier, so essentially it would have been better to just show up at the hotel and pay the current rate. In the end we received no satisfactory explanation, there was no effort on their part to make up for our annoyance and it just seemed like staff was poorly trained to handle such issues. Trust me, there are plenty of pretty boutique hotels in San Cristobal. My advise: look elsewhere.

This hotel is a must visit! It should have 5 stars already. The buildings and courtyard is so autentic and beautiful in an old spanish style mixed with boheme and contemporary art. Also it is right next to a very large market with handcrafted local items and the Church. The staff is ready to help you at any time and are very attentive. The room we booked had view to a little hall with green plants and had black beams in the ceiling. Its a very autentic and boheme Vibe. They made the bed every day along with new towels and a bottle of fresh water. The restaurant at the hotel is named Tarumba and was amazing! We where recommeded by other restaurants from the Mexican cuisine to visit this restaurant without knowing it was the same in the hotel. Tarumba won a Price for best Mexican gourmet experience 2023 and they deliver every time. You get a lot excellent food for the money. Only High recommendations and definately worth spending 3 nights. This hotel Should have 5 star +

This centrally located, beautifully decorated hotel was our home for just one night. We were delighted with the courtyard where the bar/restaurant was located and the huge number of rooms along the corridors. We were given an upstairs room which opened onto the courtyard (directly above the bar) which proved to be a problem later in the night and early the next morning with noise! The room itself was spacious with a HUGE king sized bed and good sized bathroom with plenty of hot water (essential in this town). There was plenty of storage place for our luggage and lots of power points for our devices to charge in. Our friends had a downstairs room whose windows opened onto the street and they experience a good deal of street noise so not sure which option of rooms are the quietest. The front desk was efficient and although we did not eat at the restaurant our friends did and said it was very good.
