The Citizen Hotel, Autograph Collection

I recently stayed at this property on business for the convenience of location. I was expecting quite a better experience and had a couple of issues during my stay. First, the shampoo in the shower was rotten. It smelled like sewer and I didn’t realize until it was already in my hair and I literally gagged. I still haven’t fully gotten the smell out of my hair. Second, the light over the shower did not work and just blinked on and off constantly. Third, there was loose hair all over the bathroom and elsewhere. Like I laid the soap bar down on the shower ledge and picked it up and just hair everywhere. It felt like the cleaning service was just not up to par at this hotel. The hallways also smelled really terrible on my floor almost like bad sewer lines or something. Finally - I wanted to acknowledge that $50 a night parking in Sacramento is just absurd. They don’t really offer other parking options and this cost for valet in this particular city is pretty silly. The hotel is across the street from a park with a lot of homeless activity. And all of the surrounding streets had a lot of homeless activity as well which then made the streets and the entire area smell like old, hot urine. We weren’t super impressed with the location and would probably choose to stay somewhere different if we had the opportunity again. Lastly- the gym was pretty said. Both treadmills had issues because they were old. The decor was terrible all of fast food images and there was not a single window in the gym. Overall pretty disappointed with our stay at this location.

I used to stay here often. I was shocked to come back and see how bad the neighborhood is. Homeless everywhere across the street at the park. You can’t even walk outside without some sort of harassment. If you are worried about your safety stay else where. While saying dinner at the hotel I watch two men urinate right across the street. Then a homeless person walking down the street screaming at everyone. Very unsafe area.

Every time I come to Sacramento, I make sure to stay at The Citizen. Everything about the hotel is phenomenal. I am a bit of a clean freak, and I’m never uncomfortable with the state of the rooms at The Citizen. Plus, the restaurant is one of the best restaurants I’ve had the pleasure of dining at. On my most recent trip, I was so lucky to have Tim as my server at grange. He was so personable, took the time to recommend items based on my preferences, and was all around such a wonderful person. I can’t wait to come back and hope he is my server again!

As a Titanium Bonvoy member, I look forward to trying as many Autograph Collection hotels as I can because they have great local history and are architecturally distinctive. The Citizen measures up on those fronts. But service standards don’t. I asked for an extended checkout (2:30) which was granted but my key didn’t work at 2:00. When I went back to the desk, the receptionist rekeyed but didn’t apologize for the inconvenience. I asked for my receipt by email but didn’t receive it as promised. I next learned, unlike for other Marriotts, the receipt is not available on my Bonvoy account and must be requested by calling the hotel. Once I received the receipt, I discovered I was charged for valet parking (I didn’t have a car) and the credit coupon I received, good for a small purchase in the sundries store, had not been applied. Disappointed in my hotel group 😞

Stayed here for one night. It was a decent visit. My room was on the fourth floor and I had some considerable street noise. Room was comfortable. There is a bar/restaurant on the first floor. Rooms are a little spartan, and I do not think they have room service breakfast.

Such a lovely hotel with such a welcoming and competent staff! Special kudos to Chris, Morningstar, Eli, Isaiah, Mike and Dylan. And I am very grateful to the chef for creating a delicious vegetarian meal for me to enjoy in the understated elegance of the Grange restaurant.

Great historical building for a hotel. Nicely appointed rooms. Got an upgrade to a corner room. The bathroom was on the small side with not much space to put your toiletries but like the room it was nicely appointed. Also, had a nice dinner at the restaurant called Granger. Our server, Tim, took good care of us during the entire meal. They offer a small menu but includes something for everyone - beef, fish, pasta. We'll be back there for breakfast. We would stay here again when in Sacramento. Parking here is valet only but that was okay given the downtown area.

The grange is a great restaurant that I frequently visit. Their breakfast, lunch, dinner and bar bites menu is always good. Today, my breakfast was amazing and my server, Kaitlin, was superb went above and beyond to make my experience extraordinary! Thanks Kaitlin :)

Valet damaged my car. Upon checkin the untrained new valet attendant let the bell cart smash into my Mercedes falling off the curb and denting it in multiple locations. Upon speaking with supervisor he said she was new and untrained. I asked for a claim and they took their time and didn’t want to complete. They also said there are no cameras for valet which is very suspicious. After filing a claim finally they are not taking ownership of this and if they will not compensate me and repair my car I will call their ownership group. Super unprofessional and disappointing experience. In a service driven business the lack of follow up and ownership could not have missed the mark more. I would expect the leadership team to manage the situation properly and professionally always.
