I would have to rate this as a terrible travel experience. The price we paid was quite good ($61.60) through the Capital One Travel site, but I guess you get what you pay for. We just wanted a simple place that would be relatively close to FCO airport (Rome), and here was our experience. 1. Very hard to access - we came in from Florence that day and were a bit delayed. We go to the place, which we thought we be a hotel based on the Capital One Travel site, and it was a set of apartments, with a common, locked gate. We were a bit surprised at this and were puzzled how to get in. The travel reservation did not give a room number (apartment number in this case), and the phone number provided was not working. We were in a bit of panic at this point. We walked down the block to a local bar/restaurant (amBARabà caffe'), which we loved. As we were scrambling to reach the owner of the apartment, the owner of the restaurant ended up knowing her and was able to connect us, so we were eventually able to get checked in. 2. The owner of the property seemed nice enough, but she asked for 6 Euros per person (12 total) for the city tax. I recalled reading something about this in the reservation notes, but it struck me as high. When I looked later, the charge was supposed to be 3.50 Euros each, so we were overcharged 5 Euros for this. 3. The place was extremely basic but lacking in some essentials. The bed was a thin mattress laid upon a metal frame (no box spring), so it was pretty uncomfortable. 4. The place was extremely bare. The cupboard in the kitchen contained a single plate and a single glass! The TV was a 15-inch monitor (if that). See pictures. 5. As this is an apartment unit in a building where the units all look alike, this created another logistical challenge. Although very tired, I ventured out late to pick up a couple of drinks and a snack. When I returned, I discovered that all the doors looked essentially the same, with no special marking/unit name for this unit. The key itself gave no indication. I reviewed the itinerary I had been emailed, but it gave no information on the actual unit. I spent several minutes trying to find the right unit, worried that I was waking people as I tested the key. After several efforts in vain, I contacted the unit owner, who let me in, but she seemed furious to be bothered and could not comprehend the basic problem created by not communicating a unit number in her instructions or by simply showing this on the actual door or key. 6. While the place purports convenience to the airport, we had an extremely tough time with logistics. Taxis at the airport refuse to drive you to the place since it is not in the airport zone and is also not desirable for local taxis (cannot get a return fare). Overall, it is very inexpensive, but be warned that you are likely better off finding a place for a few more Euros that is more convenient logistically and better equipped.
