Raurimu is home to the world famous Raurimu Spiral (you can watch the trains on the 2nd level from the front porch), and is only 20 mins to Whakapapa ski field, 40 mins to Turoa ski field, and about 20 mins to the nationally renowned Taumarunui Golf Course. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is rated the best one day trek in New Zealand, and listed by many as one of the top-ten day treks in the world. Haven Cottage is the perfect base for the Crossing.
