Aparthotel Maracaibo

The hotel itself is ok, paid for an upgrade which is probably worth it for the extra towel changes. Cleaning was done to an acceptable standard. As for self catering, if you like microwaved food, fine. We ate cereal for breakfast but there is no oven, just a two ring hot plate and a microwave. Nowhere to put your pots to dry either! Location wise, HiperDino over the road is ok, not an extensive choice like the big Spar across from the Mogan Mall in the centre but sufficient for the basics. You’ll have to walk to the restaurants (or taxi of course!) but it’s a pleasant walk anyway, especially when you find the steps to the road below. I didn’t know about the feral cat sanctuary next door, that would have put me off booking because there are loads of the things roaming around but if you like cats, no worries. Not the hotel’s fault! Overall, I thought the hotel was a good base to explore, away from the noise that is in the centre but close enough to walk in and find everything.

Stayed for 1 week in the middle of September with my fiancé, we’re both in our 30’s and had the best little break away here. We booked this holiday last minute, neither of us had never been to Gran Canaria before and we have nothing negative to say about our stay at the Maracaibo. The weather was perfect, sunshine everyday and not too hot. After reading all the reviews I am very glad we decided to book one of the Deluxe One Bedroom Apartments. As this just gave us a little more space in the apartment and we had a fantastic view of the swimming pool and the beach. HOTEL: - friendly/helpful hotel staff. - good aircon unit - rooms get cleaned regularly and towels changed daily. - hotel great location, high enough up for a fantastic sea view but not too high up that we couldn’t walk down to the beach and town everyday. (Roughly took us about 6/7 minutes to walk down to the centre. - nice size pool area, plenty of beds, reasonably priced food and drinks at the on-site restaurant. We didn’t spend much time at the pool as to be honest it was a little quiet for us, a little bit of subtle radio or music in the background would be quite a nice addition. BEACHES: - we only used Puerto Rico beach once but spent most days at Amadores Beach. As personally we thought beach had a bit more to it, clearer waters, more spacious, lots of beach restaurants and bars to choose from. In a taxi from the hotel took around 6 minutes and was about €7 one way. Or sometimes we walked directly there or back from the hotel which is a nice coastal walk and took around 30 minutes. We visited Anfi beach too, which is also a short taxi ride away, although a beautiful beach we preferred Amadores beach. Anfi seemed more overcrowded and had more rules and restrictions regarding playing beach games etc. - on the last day we spent the day at Amadores Beach Club. I would highly recommend doing this as a little treat. We paid €40 for the two of us. This included a large rounded beach bed facing the sea, an alcoholic or soft beverage each and full access of the pool and spa facilities in the beach club all day. We also ate in the restaurant there and the food and cocktails were amazing. AREA: - about 30/40 minutes from the airport. If you haven’t got transport included in your holiday DONT make the mistake we made and jump straight in a taxi from the airport to the hotel. We got completely ripped off and paid about $70. We later found out you can get a bus to and from airport for around €7 each and there is bus stop RIGHT OUTSIDE the hotel. (Silly us for not doing our research). - after hiring a car one day and driving round different parts of Gran Canaria we were happy really we decided to stay in Puerto Rico. It was the perfect area to be in for couples holiday in my opinion. Close to numerous beaches and lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. Our apartment 5th floor was a deluxe one bedroom apartment with a fantastic view of the harbour and beach. Sunshine on the balcony from first thing in a morning. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Great pool area and bar Great location only 5 minutes from the beach,

The staff are always excellent with their customer service but this time they excelled themselves when they went the extra mile to assist us when my sister arrived during our 2nd weeks stay. The reception staff on hearing my sister was coming changed her apartment so that we could be near each other. The restaurant staff Oliver and Tracey made her a lovely meal and served it exactly 💯 when she sat down in the restaurant area. Over all is was a restful enjoyable and entertaining in every way. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, and we are planning to go back next year. We had one week and its lovely, the rooms are big and clean, we had an apartment, with a separate bedroom, bathroom ,kitchen etc, and obviously a balcony. The staff are all wonderful friendly and helpful, and will do anything to help. A couple of issues we did have, you should be able to check in at 12-00pm, we arrived at 12-30pm but had to sit in reception for an hour ad a half as "your room is not ready" and "the maid wont be back for an hour or so" we waited nearly two hours before being given another room, which was ready, they gave us a bottle of wine for our troubles. The lady on reception was not nice, very blunt and not at all sorry or bothered about us sitting around for two hours, we met her again, and she had improved, so maybe she was having a bad day? The pool is big and warm, there is a no towel on sunbed policy, which is adhered to, so you dont have to rush down and put anything on a bed to save it, people still did, mainly brits, but northeneners, so you have to expect that. If people put towels on and disappear, speak to the lifeguard and he or she will remove them. A couple of problems with the pool, one being the smokers, there is a no smoking / vaping policy, but its not really enforced, so again the northerners smoke and vape around the pool, not caring about anyone else, one of the lifeguards did ask a couple of people to move outside the pool area, but it needs enforcing more strongly. The other problem is below. The bar and restaurant is great, again with friendly helpful staff and good food and drink. The beach is about a 6 minute walk away, down a few steps, (100) but once there its a lovely beach, with shops and restaurants all around. All in all a great hotel with good food and drink and lovely staff. A WORD OF WARNING ABOUT THE POOL, THEY HAVE REMOVED THE HANDRAILS ON THE STEPS, BUT LEFT THE FIXINGS IN THE GROUND UNDERWATER, IF YOU TREAD ON THESE AND YOU WILL WISH YOU HADNT, BE CAREFUL, ITS AT BOTH ENDS TOO.ONE DAY THE NUTS HADBEEN REMOVED, LEAVING RAZOR SHARP STUDS ON THE POOL FLOOR,I PUT THE NUTS BACK ON AS TIGHT AS I COULD,BUT IT NEEDS FIXING SOON.
