The Oak & Anchor Hotel

Nice enough room - Poor service. Would not recommend. Breakfast disappointing. Open toilet terrible. From checking staff very uninviting, felt we were imposing as they weren’t engaging with us. Made it up to room, bed pretty good but nothing else was.

First impressions were of a beautiful renovation of an old building. Quite quickly became apparent it was all style over substance. The set up is basically rooms over a pub/bar and staff are to be found behind the bar which appears to be their main focus. Room; It's open plan loo and not a great arrangement when both of us in room at same time. Wet room shower is very difficult to keep the shower water from splashing all over bathroom floor and making the bathroom one big wet room. No cupboards just a rail which once a few clothes pulled out of the cases looks messy. Steps between bathroom and bed need to be remembered if having pee at night. Service; asked for a booking in restaurant that evening and told fully booked try elsewhere. No offering at time of booking would we like to reserve restaurant or warning that tables not kept for hotel guests. Breakfast; literally laid out on the bar counter with limited choice. Asked for a second cup of coffee twice and waited 15 min before giving up waiting Bed comfortable and room clean. Location central but no interesting views. By far the most expensive stay on the Great Ocean Road comparable to central Sydney/Melbourne 5* Hotel prices yet in the end just a fancy styled room over a pub with strange service.

Thank you so much to Jemmah and Eliza for helping us arrange such a memorable celebratory dinner for us. You went out of your way to accomodate our needs. Thanks to the chef too. The starters were amazing, and we just managed to fit in the yummy desserts The only negative thing, there was too much food!!

We just stayed two nights in this wonderful, thoughtful renovated old pub. Maybe one of the nicest places we have ever stayed in Australia so far. The character and charm of this historic place was protected while all the modern amenities were implemented as well. We also ate in the pub. It was absolutely delicious. Loved the interpretation of the ice berg salad. Staff is extremely friendly and professional. We had a very warm welcome. Great job to the owners of this place.

We enjoyed the fixed price two course menu at the Oak and Anchor. The food was nicely presented and full of flavour. The beef was perfectly slow cooked . We were really impressed with the attentive service . Bookings seemed essential. The dining area has a nice atmosphere. Although the menu is limited it is very good .

This is not a review of a stay, but of the response to a last minute cancellation due to illness and hospitalisation of one of our party. We called the hotel late, well past business hours, to explain the situation. Their response was almost immediate, caring and understanding. They allowed us to cancel with no cost. We feel this is wonderful, especially considering the difficult times that they would have had over the last 2 years. we will definitely return when our friend is well again.
