I am a fan of Riu hotels and have a Riu Gold loyalty card. Having stayed at other Riu Palace hotels, I have to say that I was underwhelmed by the Palace Palmeras - not really up to Palace standard, I would say. Lacking in facilities, and the gym was a disappointment. However, overall it is a lovely hotel, well maintained. I had booked a "Garden Room" which was in an annex block, conveniently located for the restaurant, bars, theatre and the back gate to the beach. No lifts to wait for. I was disappointed with the location of my room which was north facing, overlooking the fire escape and the children's play area. I asked for a move, but the answer was no, and I was assured that the sun would come onto my balcony later in the day. This was not the case as the main building and palm trees blocked the November afternoon sun. The room itself was very nice, larger than the ones in the main building. Good WiFi, tea/coffee provisions, and the safe was free to use (for a change). Plenty of soft drinks in the fridge, refilled every two days. Good powerful shower. This is an All Inclusive hotel, with drinks and food available 24 hours a day. It is not an adults only hotel - as evidenced by the children's play area - and there were a few children around; but the hotel has the feel of an adults only hotel, with little to keep the youngsters occupied. I think most youngsters would be bored. In November, the clientele were mostly retired German couples. There is an excellent choice of food and I enjoyed the dining experience. One evening, I watched the Abba tribute in the theatre. Having been lucky enough to have stayed at the Palace Maspalomas a few times, I prefer that hotel with its spa and pools; so I don't think I will be returning to the Palmeras, even though it is less expensive than staying half board at the Maspalomas.
