Hotel del Centro

The rooms are big but very old. Even the sockets are old and it wasn't easy to find a spot to charge the phone. The rooms are clean but except for some shampoo the hotel doesn't provide anything. The wifi is also bad, but it's very close to everything we wanted to see.

The hotel is located near to the Central station, that is convenient for arriving and departing by train, but the neighborhood look very scary during the night, and I felt unsafe to come back to the hotel after 6:00 PM.

Good position to explore Palermo

Stayed at the hotel at this hotel for 5 nights. I've been in worse hotels but also been in better hotels. The room was big but old and could do with an update. No fridge and air conditioner was controlled by staff at the front desk. As hot as Palermo was, the fact that the room was tiled made it cooler. The bed was changed on the 3rd day but towels were changed every day. The room had a verandah which I always like to take advantage of when going to hotels but the view was of a laneway and underneath the verandah was a skip bin that was full every day and the laneway was littered so that stopped me from going out to the verandah. Wifi service was good. A 24hr reception service is provided. Breakfast was provided but you had to pay for that service but we decided to go outside for breakfast. The only issue we had while staying there was being woken up one night at 10.30pm when a staff member at reception rang us to see if we would like to have breakfast at the hotel the next morning. The hotel is in close proximity to the train station and as the hotel is on the main road, buses are always available. Also, there is constant noise from the main road but if you shut the verandah door then it blocks out the noise but I was woken up each morning at 2am by what sounded like a garbage truck. If I went to Palermo again then I would probably look for another hotel but it's doubtful that I would return to Palermo anyway so that won't be happening.

We spent three nights in this tiny hotel and despite the hospitality of the staff at the reception and the breakfast area, we are sorry but we do not recommend a stay in it. The first surprise was the location: the reception is on the third floor (second level above ground) and could be reached by a really small elevator or by steps. Our room next to the breakfast area, especially our bathroom and the whole hotel smelt badly of mildew. The bathroom ceiling was completely covered with mildew. Everything there needs an urgent and thorough refurbishment. The WiFi was also bad and needed a constant reboot by the staff. The socket for the electrical razor in the bathroom was losing contact. The socket in the room was also loose. Despite the noise from the Via Roma, we were happy that we didn't get a room in the Via Pola side alley because the garbage containers there were full, wide open and they smelled really bad.

First impressions were not good. The hotel was an easy 350 metre walk from Palermo's imposing railway station after I caught the excellent TrenItalia sleeping car intercity train from Milano Central that uses Europe's sole remaining train ferry. The entrance was drab with no ramp. So drag the suitcase up a few steps. This part of the city was rundown. The historic lift conveyed me to the second floor where the very helpful Marco greeted me. One had to walk up to the third floor. The room was huge and high ceilinged with beautiful paintwork and no visible wall cracks. It was spacious with a double bed and two singles. I hate doonas when travelling as they are too hot. It was great that instead, there was a top sheet and blanket. Lighting was good. WiFi worked as expected. Aircon was super quiet. There was a TV and desk. The bathroom was similarly roomy. No problems with hot water or towels. I had a generously sized walk-in shower. The breakfast was basic. However the rest of the stay was terrific. I slept well thanks to the blackout curtains and shutters. A diamond in the rough.

If I could sum it up - not what we were expecting. Arrived late and was hard to find the entrance - we drove. That was a mistake as parking (even late at night) was impossible. Room was small, dated and basic but spotlessly clean, reception was 24/7 and really helpful and location was great. Once we got our bearings it was east to navigate to the entrance and work out how to get to the reception. The building g is shared with other hotels / businesses and as others mentioned there in an antique lift to get you to the 3rd floor. Breakfast was interesting. Very very small eating area so be prepared to make friends !!! All in all the hotel did what it needed to do for us but as I say at the beginning just not what we expected.

We stayed at The Centro for 1 week, from 9/6/23 to 16/6/23. The hotel is very close to all the bars + restaurants of the town, and a 5 minute walk to the main line train station. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. The rooms are kept very clean, but basic. No mini fridge or kettle, no tea / coffee making equipment. The rooms are a good size. The only complaint from us, was the fact we were woken every morning in the early hours by the bin men, who were very noisy, emptying metal bins from under our balcony (room 7) and a water heater in the hallway opposite that made noises all through the night. The breakfast, €5 each, is simple and ok, but nothing more. Nothing cooked, just cakes and bread rolls with ham or cheese. This hotel is ideal as a base, somewhere to leave your case and explore, but not much else. However, it is clean and the staff are nice, so it’s not all bad.
