Bennetts Hotel

I have stayed here in the past, but that was a few years ago. It appears to have changed hands unfortunately for the worst. The bed linen was clean, and I did stay the night. The stairs leading to the rooms are disgusting. It’s obvious they need cleaning. The room itself was large and had wallpaper peeling just near the window and over the couch. The TV was a hit and miss with the picture breaking up constantly in the bathroom you could see cobwebs on the pipes which was quite obvious, and you did not need to go looking for them. I had agreed breakfast for 07:00am, at four minutes to the gentleman turned up and requested I give him some time to setup. 14 minutes later, he emerged with a plate in his hand, I asked him what that was and I was informed it was my breakfast, given that no order had been taken and I’m the only one in the place. he told me this is their standard breakfast, (on the plate was one egg some beans, three sausages and two hashbrowns). I asked where’s the bacon, I got the same reply. This is our standard breakfast. I asked if I just wanted beans on toast and got the same reply. This is our standard breakfast. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff-team, and the cleanliness of our room and the hotel facilities stood out for us. The hotel was everything we needed for a short stay and well priced for its standard. The downstairs public areas have been nicely refurbed with a modern touch. The staircase to the bedrooms is narrow and would benefit from a refresh of the grey paint and grey carpet. The grey theme continues upstairs where the layout is quirky with narrow corridors and would benefit from a refreshed lighter look. Our Superior room was nicely prepared but had a curiously large empty space and a TV therefore too far away to watch from the bed. It would benefit from some comfy chairs and a coffee table. There was a rickety clothes rail instead of a wardrobe (the wardrobe alcove had lost its rail). Being at the front there was a degree of traffic noise. We’d stay again but ask for a basic room on the side of the building. There is car parking at the back, about 8 -10 spaces, accessed easily by turning left after the hotel, first left and left again, to come back down a one way street. I don’t know if it has CCTV but we experienced no problems. Breakfast is not their thing, a basic cooked meal (no choice/options) provided on request, but does the job, unless you have special requirements like GF foods.

Visited the restaurant after it had been recommended. Lovely food, really good curries and definitely one of the best I have had out. Catered well for our daughter with a half portion of curry and even gave her a free ice cream. Brilliant service and staff and food was enjoyed by all. Will definitely visit again
