The Diplomat Boutique Hotel

The Diplomat has, hands down, the best service that we have encountered in all of our travels. In fact, it has ruined any other hotel we book in the future because we will now compare all future stays with The Diplomat. I loved our entire experience. It is a small boutique hotel with beautiful rooms (air conditioned) and wonderful breakfasts. It is only a 20-min walk to all the action in Merida, with easy parking out front if you’re driving. The only (slight) negative were the beds. They are a tad hard, however as someone who loves a soft bed I would still book here again. Thank you Sara and team. You guys are the best!

We spent a week in Merida but unfortunately only the second half was at the Diplomat (the first part of our stay we were in another part of town). From the moment we arrived, we received such individualized attention, assistance, and care. Reservations at the best restaurants and the best times were made for us before we had even arrived! Suggestions for activities were generously and kindly provided. Delicious complimentary breakfasts were provided every morning (even ones to go on excursion days). The hotel is sublime, perfectly designed and arranged. Self serve tequila and mezcal tastings in the afternoon and evenings. There is an honor bar and gift shop. The only other place I’ve seen an honor bar is in Canada and wouldn’t you know it, the owners are Canadian. The gift shop has beautifully arranged products of local artisans. Everything was so well selected. We considered extending our stay because we loved this hotel so much.

I’m not entirely sure how hotel star ratings are determined, but if ever a place deserved five stars, it’s The Diplomat Hotel. From the moment I arrived, I felt comforted. That may not be the word most would choose, but for me, it's everything—especially when landing somewhere new. I had a very rough flight into Mérida, one that left me quite ill, and I’ve been carrying the weight of some deeply stressful personal circumstances. So to find myself in a space so serene, so welcoming, so impeccably maintained—it felt like a gift. Every element of The Diplomat feels intentional. You can sense the love and thought behind it all. There’s a story behind each piece of furniture, every fixture, and the small daily rituals that make the experience feel quietly luxurious. And the soul of the space is its people. The staff are not only gracious, they are deeply thoughtful—and that spirit begins with Sara, the owner, whose presence is as integral as any design choice. She sets the tone, and it ripples through the entire experience. I spent two days of my stay recovering from that difficult arrival, and they cared for me in a way that went far beyond hospitality—checking in often, bringing ginger tea, offering ice packs, and making sure I felt safe. It wasn’t just service. It was care, offered with heart. I couldn’t recommend The Diplomat more, and I’m already looking forward to the day I return.
