This is quite simply the dirtiest and worse motel we have ever stayed at. We were en route on a cross county trip and needed a quiet hotel to stay the night. Memphis was the halfway point and we chose the Red Roof Inn in East Memphis. Upon checking in, the manager was in an office area behind "bullet proof" glass with only a basket to provide ID and credit card information. There is a large sign that says that all guest must provide a $100 cash or debit deposit for each room that is refundable upon checkout and satisfactory inspection. I was disgusted when the attendant gave me the key to my room and he said, this is where we put the "white people" and he didn't assess the deposit on my room. Presumably, he was inferring that white people are lower risk and don't require a deposit and perhaps are segregated from the other guests. This employee appeared to be of Indian or Pakistani descent. I only state this to provide context. I haven't heard a statement like that in a very long time. The room was the filthiest room I have ever stayed in. Holes in the wall, a large crack in the shower, black mold in the shower area, badly stained carpet, etc. The room had a bad smell of cigarettes and had a very musty smell. It was a non-smoking room. There was a lot of road noise as this hotel sits about 50 yards from Interstate 40. The entire hotel is in bad disrepair and really in unacceptable state to house guests. Upon check out, I had to wait 5 minutes for an employee to come to the desk. The ice machine in the lobby didn't work and the coffee was cold. The hotel couldn't have been any worse. I hope Red Roof Inns audits this property as it is unacceptable in so many ways.
