Our first time to Hotel Baia Delle Zagare was pleasant, but very disappointing. The resort itself has a spectacular view from the restaurant and the beach and it has beautiful well maintained landscaping throughout the property. The windowed elevator to the North beach was quiet, quick and efficient, and provided a great view. We booked four nights, with breakfast included. Our room was a Deluxe Veranda on the first floor (one flight of stairs as there in no elevator) of building Oleander with Sea View, however the view was obstructed by many trees, which does not meet my standard of a sea view. The veranda was however spacious, as was the room. It was very clean and had many wonderful modern features with a very comfortable king size bed. The temperatures during our stay exceeded 38C and the air conditioning in our room was inefficient, and we were unable to turn it below 22C. The room comes with a minibar with a few non-alcoholic beverages, however ice is only available at the bars. We ordered ice to our room on the first 2 days, and when they delivered the second bucket we were rudely told that the next order of ice would cost us 10 Euro! The breakfasts are buffet, however, they insist on having a server to place each item on your plate, versus self serve. We found this to be very annoying and extremely inefficient. And quite often they would give you more than what you asked for and were often times rude as they were very rushed trying to cater to everyone. The seating at breakfast is first come first serve, so the best views were generally taken first, however at dinner, you must make a reservation through the front desk for one of three seatings, and then the maître d would sit you where he wanted, however, be aware that unless you are a mezza pensione (booked all your meals at the hotel) you will not get a good table. The same goes for the beach lounges. The more you pay, the better your position on the beach. Most of the serving staff in the main restaurant appeared to be students in training with little or no experience. The dinner menu was very limited, expensive, lacked flavour and appeared more like assembly line packaged meals. Certainly not 4 star hotel quality by any means. We had our first 2 dinners there, and on the 3rd night we opted to try a small family run restaurant around the corner from the entrance to the hotel where we had excellent food and friendly and efficient service, with a spectacular el fresco sea view. We returned again to this lovely place on our 4th and final night for another fabulous meal. Also, be aware that you will need swim shoes for the beach as it is all pebbles. The best part of our experience at the hotel was the hostess Ilaria, who always greeted us with a warm and friendly smile. In summary, it is indeed a beautiful spot, but the food and service in no way measures up to the standard of a four star resort, and the price you pay.
