The Sundowner on Lake George

Our reservation was paid and set Sept 2024. We had reciept and email. When we arrive for a sold out weekend, for a huge town event they have oops missed the reservation and given our room away. No apologies we had to insist on a full reimbursement. So we were out the hrs we traveled, the gas we spent, the sitters we had to pay for an oops. I would NEVER recommend this operation. They also run another motel in town who never reimbursed a cancelation prior to this. Buyer beware.

I booked this trip to celebrate my daughter’s high school graduation. Unfortunately, two weeks before our scheduled stay, I became seriously ill and was prescribed multiple antibiotics in hopes of recovering in time. Just two days before our departure, I relapsed and felt worse than ever. I reached out to the host, Robert, to see if we could reschedule, especially since there were rooms available in late August and September. Despite explaining the situation and offering a doctor’s note, as well as having my doctor willing to speak with him directly, Robert refused to accommodate any changes and strictly enforced his no-refund, no-cancellation policy. After multiple attempts to resolve the issue with both Robert and Airbnb, it became clear that Robert had no concern for my well-being or that of my family. I was also concerned about the health of other guests, as I was highly contagious at the time. Feeling I had no choice, and unwilling to lose the money I paid, I made the five-hour trip to Lake George while battling a 101-degree fever, strep throat, and cellulitis. When we arrived, we were shocked by what we saw. We had expected to stay at someone’s personal home, maybe with a few other guests, something more like a bed and breakfast. Instead, it turned out to be a motel with over 50 rooms/units. The parking situation was a nightmare. If you drive a nice car, I wouldn’t recommend bringing it, spaces are extremely tight, and navigating the lot requires weaving around awkward turns just to get in and out. Robert’s photos are extremely misleading and don’t reflect the true condition of the property. The exterior was completely outdated and unkempt. While the room was nicely decorated, it was far from clean. The windows were dirty, the TV was covered in fingerprints, and the fans were caked with dust. The fireplace glass hadn’t been cleaned, and the bathroom was unpleasant. To top it off, when the kids went to lie down, they found potato chips scattered along the side of the bed. The pool and hot tub were extremely dirty, giving the impression that no one was maintaining the property at all. We did our best to make the most of the trip. In the mornings, my fever would go down and my throat felt manageable, so I was able to enjoy a few moments with my family. But by midday, the fever would return, and I was back in bed. One morning, I went to the front desk because the kids wanted to go kayaking. The group before us had just returned their equipment, and without any cleaning or disinfecting, the staff immediately handed us the same paddles and life jackets. The same thing happened when we returned ours, no sanitation whatsoever. Knowing I was contagious, it’s unsettling to think my germs were likely passed on to the next guests. Robert, you claim to be a “family man,” but just like your misleading photos, that couldn’t be further from the truth. According to the staff, you’re never on-site, and honestly, it shows. My experience at the Sundowner Hotel in Lake George was incredibly frustrating. I booked a room through ******* and paid in full. After a grueling five-hour drive through a snowstorm—our first family trip with our baby—we arrived exhausted, only to be told the hotel never received payment from *******. The hotel would not give us a room unless we paid in full for the same amount i paid *******. So we were stranded in a snowstorm with a 6 month old and no other option but to pay for the room again. The manager’s ‘solution’ for me to get a refund was to suggest I tell ******* I wanted to cancel my stay because I couldn’t make it. But, I didn’t purchase trip insurance, so ******* wouldn’t refund me after numerous attempts. This left us stranded, stressed, and out of pocket for a room I had already paid for. It’s a real shame because the hotel itself was beautiful. The rooms were clean, the view was stunning, and everything else was lovely. I would have loved to recommend this place. Unfortunately, due to the unprofessionalism of management and the lack of proper communication with *******, I just can’t. Travelers deserve better reliability and service. I have been visiting Lake George since i was a child and this was my worst experience on the lake. Shame on the management of this hotel! UPDATE: When we arrived home we explained everything to *******. They refunded me in full.
