Hôtel Mercure Caen Côte de Nacre

Located some distanced from the Centre of Caen, but ideal for the traveller who does not intent to leave the hotel in the evening. The staff were welcoming and it has a good sized bar area. We ate in the Hotel and had a great dinner. Would visit again.

Overall a good hotel for a stopover night! Clean, modern and comfortable rooms. Aircon was ok and room amenities also ok. Bathroom was brand new and very nice. Used the gym whilst staying, limited equipment but we had it to ourselves which was great! We received a token for a welcome drink at the bar so went to use it thinking the token was for the room rather than the individual drink and was abruptly told at the bar it would cover one drink. Perhaps the person working at the bar could have been a bit more friendly about it.

Hotel rooms are ok, certainly better quality than others seems from friends staying nearer the centre of Caen. However, my experience at breakfast was poor. There was little in terms of available options (items not replenished for over 30mins). Bar staff intent on watching football than serving. Bat was seemingly not attended however what I believed to be a patron was bar staff who made no indication of service until after I sought assistance from the front desk. The hotel is far from quality food establishments and dispute the locality to tram service still remains 20-30 mins from areas of interest at point of embarkation on public transport. Would avoid unless a last resort.

Please note that this hotel does not have a restaurant available to everyone, as mentioned on many sites, it is completely remote and there is no restaurant within walking distance! If there are groups with buses, the restaurant is only available to them, not to travelers with families! This was not mentioned anywhere in the reservation/booking! So if you are traveling with your family, there is a good chance that you simply cannot use the restaurant. They just send you to the center of Caen via tram. If as a hotel you cannot provide the offered facilities to all rooms, stop renting rooms... In the morning at 7:00 am there was also no hot water and at 7:30 am there was no one at the reception to check out, we were waiting with several people. There is an urgent need for new management... We travel a lot and do not quickly write a review, but this hotel is just very bad... Not even sufficient for a quick 1 night stay ...

If you're not an EU citizen or if there are non-EU citizens in your group, I highly recommend you to avoid this hotel because you will be asked to fill lengthy forms, which is not the case in other hotels.

This hotel is more like a Super 8. It is located in a business district with no restaurants within walking distance and there is a train that passes by a few blocks from the hotel that goes into town. After a long day of sightseeing and the darkness, it is unreasonable to have to find the train, pay the fare, find a restaurant and then get back to the hotel. The hotel does have a restaurant and our first dinner was included in the tour. Fourteen of us tried the dinner and the only thing eatable was the dessert. When asked the next day who wanted to reserve a table at the hotel restaurant for dinner, not one person in our group reserved. Now we are searching the internet for the closest restaurants in the area only to find out no taxi's will come so far out of town. We were there three miserable nights and ended up buying snacks during our tours and eating them in our room for dinner while we watch tv that all in French. Some of our tour companions were in rooms with no or broken tv, so I guess that was a bonus. We have stayed in quite a few Mercure hotels that were fine. Stay away from this one. We were traveling with SmarTours on the Heart of France tour. Several of us have complained to them about this hotel but it is once again offered on their 2023 tours.
