This was our favorite place to stay during a family trip to the Big Island and Maui. We stayed at six different places overall, and the North Shore Lookout stood out in so many ways. The B&B sits on stunningly beautiful, lush grounds with an ocean view down below, has a lovely pool and hot tub, is squeaky clean, and the daily cooked-to-order breakfast is always delicious. Horses graze in an adjacent pasture, and Mimi the kitty welcomes her guests graciously. It doesn't get more serene than this. We were up on the summit of Haleakala for sunrise in a little over an hour, and the Paniolo Suite had plenty of space for our family of three (and a well-stocked kitchen). I'm so glad we got to stay here, this place is a true gem!

We had always wanted to stay close by Haleakala so we could do a long hike without driving halfway across the island. With an extensive search we discovered this bed and breakfast and booked for 3 nights in March. We could not have been more pleased or surprised with the property and our room. The location was perfect. Away from the big resorts in a beautiful scenic area near Makawao. The convience to Haleakala was perfect to beat the crowds and bicyclists. We did a nice 1/2 day hike and enjoyed the warm pool and hot tub afterwards. The B&B sits on a small hillside with ocean views in the distance. We loved the quietness with occassional birdsong. There are several seating areas outdoors, near the pool or out the back deck. One morning we ate our breakfast on the deck outside, and one day ate inside in the spacious shared gathering room. Our suite was the Pele suite and thought it was perfect for our 3 nights. The suite is huge with a hall that separates the bathroom from the main bedroom. Tasteful decor, and luxury linens/towels. There is a nice mini kitchenette with utensils, plates, glasses and welcoming basket of goodies. The inn also has an outdoor kitchen so we used the bar b que to prepare fresh tuna steaks one evening. We love bed and breakfasts and this one is without a doubt one of the best we have ever stayed at.

We spent 4 nights in the lovely Paniolo Suite which is huge, well equipped and has a very comfortable bed. North Shore Lookout is in a great spot with beautiful views and an ideal location to visit The Road to Hana, North Shore and Haleakala. Gorgeous pool/hot tub area and lots of attractive communal seating areas indoors and out. The only slight downside for us was when we booked, we thought it would be a buffet-style breakfast, This changed before we checked in to being given 'a breakfast menu to choose from' which implies you still have some choice. Actually there is no choice so if you don't like the one item on that day's menu, there is no alternative. But this shouldn't put you off ( unless you are a very picky eater) as the positives well outweigh this slight negative and you have a good kitchenette area with a fridge and microwave. Would highly recommend it.

My girlfriend and I were scheduled to stay at Maui’s North Shore Lookout in October. We booked months in advance (May) to secure our spot and were eagerly counting down the days until our arrival. In August, deadly wildfires raged across Maui. This included the upcountry, where Maui’s North Shore Lookout is located. Our government advised travelers to avoid the area and consider cancelling trips to the island. We made the decision to cancel our vacation. We were able to cancel everything except our stay at Maui’s North Shore Lookout. Maui’s North Shore Lookout has a cancellation policy of 60 days prior to your arrival. We made the decision to cancel but were too late… merely hours past the deadline. We had hoped that a mutual understanding or exception could be made by the owners. Emails unanswered for days and phone calls with messages never returned. When my girlfriend was able to get someone on the phone, she was given a verbal agreement to cancel the reservation in full. Unfortunately, (days later) it was reversed because we didn’t give enough notice. We lost our initial deposit (which is half the total cost of the stay) due to a situation beyond anyone’s control. We tried to do the right thing by cancelling. We booked under a completely different set of circumstances and just want out. I don’t think visiting at this time is remotely appropriate. Unacceptable customer service from a business that remained fully operational the entire time.

It's been a week since we left, and we genuinely miss the North Shore Lookout! Our family of three (mom, dad, and teen daughter) has visited O'ahu, The Big Island, and Kaua'i; this was our third time in Maui. The experience of staying here in the Maui Upcountry might be our favorite! The property feels secluded, but it is a short 8-minute drive to the charming town of Makawao, where we enjoyed good restaurants and plenty of non-touristy shopping. Less than 30 minutes to OGG, it is the perfect location to explore the road to Hana, Haleakalā, and other towns like Pa'ia and Haiku. The famous Maui Gold Pineapple Tour is also nearby. The property is part of a small farm with an overlook toward Kahului. By day you can see the ocean and at night the lights of the city (even fireworks on the 4th of July). The B&B features five well-appointed suites. Ours was the largest (Paniolo), with two rooms/sleeping areas and a kitchenette. We were welcomed with a basket of goodies, a bottle of Prosecco, beach towels/chairs/umbrella, and a small cooler to take out on excursions. The owners live onsite in a separate house. They and all the staff were incredibly gracious hosts. Two other couples were staying when we were there. It was quiet and peaceful, and everyone had private spaces to enjoy. The shared living room has games, blankets, and refreshments. A lovely breakfast is served to each guest on the covered patio, where you can enjoy Hawaiian music and fresh island air. Grateful that they had a washer and dryer for guests to use as well. The pool was a real treat as we had it to ourselves most of the time. Pool towels, loungers, hammocks, and rafts/floats made for a perfectly relaxing afternoon after exploring in the morning. The surrounding forest, the views, the breeze, and the occasional brief rain shower made it feel like paradise. We stayed for four nights, moving to the Hyatt resort in Ka'anapali for four more nights. Combining the two locations gave us the best of both worlds, though we all agree the North Shore Lookout was our favorite. Mahalo!

Beautiful property but be wary of the location. It’s very secluded and in the event of heavy rain you may not be able to access the property. This unfortunately happened to us while on our honeymoon, and of course the storm wasn’t the hosts fault, however we were met with some rude attitude when we asked for a refund since we had to find other accommodations for the evening. It seems pretty straightforward that if someone has to find another place to stay because they literally can’t access someone’s property, that the host should offer a refund, however they threw us through a whole gambit of why they couldn’t. If you decide to stay here make sure you have a good car as the roads can flood in the event of heavy rain (any convertible or non 4 wheel drive car probably won’t cut it so beware!). We had to drive through some seriously flooded roads to get to the property at one point during our stay and we would not have made it if we hadn’t been in a 4Runner. We ultimately wish the hosts had been a bit more accommodating and reasonable when an unfortunate event happened, it just left a very sour taste in our mouth.
