Hotel Corps de Garde

This hotel was established on a canal in 1634 to house the town guards at one of the entrances to the city. It ia a charming hotel with some truly amazing rooms. While staying in the hotel last September, we were given the corner room on the 2nd floor at the front - it was huge and very old world. The food in the restaurant is first-rate. This hotel offers a great value for the price.

We stayed in this hotel for a short visit in Groningen during a business trip. It is a very pleasant place to stay, with nice rooms (especially the ones on the top floors) for a good price. The breakfast is good. The staff was very friendly and service minded. All in all definitely a place I will come back to when I visit Groningen again.

Hotel Corps de Garde is a terrific hotel in Groningen located in the city centre area right along the canal. The hotel is a converted historic building with an original classic exterior and a modern, updated interior. We had to follow a bit of a maze of hallways and stairways to reach our room. We were in room 15, which was a fairly good sized room and a bit quirky with regards to the bathroom. The sink was in the sleeping area and there was a separate toilet stall and another separate shower stall, both with frosted glass doors. It was a little different. The staff was very helpful and welcoming and even recommended a great place for authentic dutch food for dinner. (Roezemoles). Breakfast is served in a large, comfortable cafe/lounge area. There are a few choices for breakfast, appropriately named The Big Breakfast and The Small Breakfast. The location of the hotel is ideal for visiting Groningen, which is a very pleasant city in which to walk around. It is situated right on the canal that encircles the city centre. The Grote Markt and the Centrum area are only a 5-10 minute walk away. And just across the street from the hotel is the cleanest, brightest underground parkade that I have ever seen. Groningen is a very lovely city to visit and we look forward to spending time there again, when we definitely will stay at the Hotel Corps de Garde.

I stayed in a room at the back of the hotel so hoped it would be quiet, but it wasn't. The room had huge single glazed windows, and there were students revelling in the street late at night, only to be woken up by refuse collectors in the early morning. The single glazing on a West aspect also meant the room was incredibly hot on a sunny April evening, but it cooled down quickly. On the plus side, its location does mean that it's a short walk from anywhere in central Groningen, and about 15 minutes walk from the main central station. Otherwise it was a very pleasant and historic hotel, with an excellent Dutch breakfast, including scrambled egg and bacon. the main bar area includes masses of books to browse through. Checking in/out was rapid & friendly at the bar. The room itself was comfortable and (for one person) very spacious, though it only had a walk in shower and a lack of wardrobe space as it was simply furnished.

Very well run historic boutique hotel. attentive service, tastefull interior, central location, competitive rates, generous breakfast. All you need ist there, Unnecessary chi-chi is skipped. We will return, thanks....

PROS: 1.) Lovely heritage building in Groningen's old town centre. (Request a canal view!) 2.) The best of Dutch service - staff are practical and always friendly. 3.) Very nice breakfast buffet, in an attractive dining room. 4.) All the shops, cafes and bars of the town centre are within easy walking distance. CONS: None to report for this establishment! TIPS: 1.) Aïnda laundry is very good, if your dirty laundry has piled up during your travels. It's a 5-min walk around the corner on Nieuwe Ebbingestraat. 8 euros for one reasonable-sized bag. 2.) It's a bit too far to walk if you're arriving at the train station. Best pay the 10 euros for a taxi.
