The Grande Fjord Hotel is the perfect spot to stay in Geiranger. The hotel is about a kilometre out of the village which means you avoid all the crowds from the cruise ships milling around the cafes and shops. Conveniently, the hotel runs an on-call shuttle service if you want to have a meal or do a little shopping in the village. The hotel is ideally situated on the banks of the fjord and the higher rooms have an expansive view of the stunning landscape. The rooms are compact, but comfortable and clean. It's not a new hotel, but it appears to have been recently renovated and painted. The hotel has an excellent restaurant and bar on the top floor, the food is top quality and at the usual Nowegian prices. Breakfast is also served here and is also excellent. One note of confusion is caused by the location of the reception. The impression is that it's located at the top entrance as you turn off the road. In fact, reception is around the other side of the hotel downhill from the driveway entrance. Geiranger and the Grande Fjord Hotel are not only beautiful places to stay, they are also well located for day trips to surrounding areas such as the Dalsnibba Skywalk or Trollstigen.

Stayed 1 night in this wonderful hotel, we were kindly upgraded to a double fjord view room. The view was stunning and the room so cosy and comfortable. Honestly the most comfortable bed i ever slept in. All the staff are so friendly and helpful. The room has everything you need including a little fridge. The hot tubs were great and as it was off season we had one tub to ourselves. Cocktails in the bar were amazing. Breakfast the best i have had in any hotel! So much choice. I can find no fault in this place and I’m quite a fussy person! I only wish we could stay longer. What an amazing experience, thanks to all the people who make this place so special. Also we chatted in the bar to many interesting people from all over the world. LOVED it here.

The hotel is very nice and well maintained. Our room had a nice view of the fjord and the bathroom was modern. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent. The hotel is close to the center of the town where ferries arrive and from where tours of the area begin. However because there is no pedestrian pavement, one requires transportation. There are very few taxis, so one is dependent on the hotel shuttle service. The trip from town takes less than 5 minutes. It is very important to advise the hotel of one's arrival time in Geiranger. I forgot to inform them which was my error. On arrival in a small town swarming with tourists, I called the hotel more than once and there was no answer at the reception, the shuttle service nor the restaurant. Miraculously we found a taxi which is rare. The lady at the front desk who checked us in informed me the shuttle operates only five times a day. When I explained this would be a problem for us as we needed to take some tours and also return to the hotel on the day we were leaving, she gave the impression that one needed to stick to the fixed times. When I asked to speak to the Manager I was told that she did not like my attitude. This is the first time that I have been travelling in 50 years, that I ever experienced such an unpleasant reaction by a hotel staff member. It turned out to be no problem at all. The hotel management are very flexible if one needs a shuttle outside the fixed times. Hotel staff were all very friendly and polite. Helga at the front desk, Jacob, Samuel and Maria were all very helpful, friendly and went out of their way to assist us. They are all a great asset to the hotel.

Flawless stay of two nights. We wished we'd stayed for a week! Easy pick up from the pier: Just call for a free ride if you came by boat. The location is what drew us to this hotel. Well away from the cruise ships and their chaos, but close enough to zip into town easily. We did walk in once and it's easy but traffic could make it unsettling. A ride in was always available. The bar is gorgeous and so friendly. The views are spectacular, as expected. Hyskje restaurant was superb. Great wine list, menu and service. Make a reservation for sure. Breakfast was excellent as well. Lunch is not served at the hotel so go into town for that. Our room was so well thought out. We lacked for nothing. Very comfortable. The view and our deck were amazing. All of the above was awesome but the people who looked after us make this property shine brightest. Every single person made sure we were happy. The serenity of early morning looking out onto the fjord is indescribable.
