Had the pleasure of eating here over Christmas. As soon as you walk through the door, you receive a warm Highland welcome. Had a drink in the bar before our meal. This is as good as it gets in Scotland. The hotel is stunning & the food was amazing. My loin of Venison was perfect. The baked alaska desert was also very impressive, especially when set on fire with whisky. Every aspect of the service was excellent. We will be back in the future. A highlight of our Christmas break in Gairloch.

Positives: The lodge is in a beautiful location. Stunning views over the loch. The food was good and the staff were friendly. The restaurant has lovely views. Negatives: The property has seen better days. There was a total lack of attention to detail throughout. Windows were dirty and dusty. Some light bulbs not working. Cushions in the lounge seem mismatched with the furniture. Staff although lovely were a little laissez-faire. Our room was tiny and cramped. The window rattled all night and the wood around the window was rotten. The bathroom was covered in mould. I think with some tweaks this hotel could be fabulous but in its current state we will not be returning. It is not good value for the money it cost to stay there.

Arriving at the Shieldaig Lodge we were greeted by a lovely gentleman who was friendly and looked after us for check in. Our deluxe room no 9 was dated and we felt a little disappointed, the hotel charge a premium for their accommodation and with the added extra of an evening meal the one night stay was in excess of £500, the windows were mouldy and looked like they hadn’t be cleaned for a very long time, the duvet which I asked for it to be feather free was lumpy and had massive areas with no quilting at all, uht milk pods not nice, the room was smaller than expected and the lighting was very poor and some didn’t work, our room was also next door to someone playing their tv very loudly! The bathroom had no room for toiletries and was very small. Dinner was above average but had issues with textures and the pairing of ingredients used in my choice of main course. I choose a vegetarian option which combined a stuffed tomato, stuffed courgette, asparagus and a puree which when combined was very sloppy and just didn’t compliment each other, the whole dish lacked texture, my husband said his venison was okay but not amazing, the Eaton mess dessert was the nicest part of my meal. We finished our evening playing pool in the games room which was enjoyable. We slept okay but the duvet was uncomfortable and not luxurious like you would expect in a four star hotel. Breakfast was once again okay but nothing outstanding, we asked for more butter and hot water to dilute the very strong decaf coffee which took ages to appear, we had to ask 3 times for the butter. The grounds are beautiful but the hotel needs some attention to keep the building maintained and up to a standard that such a stunning building deserves. We left disappointed and don’t feel we had good value for money.

The only thing going for this hotel is the position and views across the bay . Our room was badly in need of a refurb , huge gap under the door , kept awake by people in opposite room who thought it a good idea to sing along to music at 11pm , and the walls are so thin . Ridiculous washbasin that is so low and tap that sticks out so far it’s impossible to wash your face . Staff pleasant enough, but no personality and just seem miserable. Room extremely small with very old fashioned, seen better days furniture. We mentioned to the staff about the racket coming from the room opposite and they just laughed. Probably the worst hotel that we have all stayed in .

Shieldag Lodge is in a beautiful area, the journey there was a challenge on single track roads but a beautiful drive. Our room with a Loch View room 5 was lovely. Very comfortable bed, peaceful nights sleep with a lovely bathroom with a heated floor. I took a walk to the ww11 liberator crash sight more of a climb but as I was advised very boggy, the hotel has an immense supply of wellies which I took full use of. Beautiful beaches only short drives away. The hotel whisky and Gin bar has a great choice and Mark has a super knowledge of what to recommend. Dinner at this hotel is special each night a different menu beautifully curated and presented. Had the 7 course tasting menu one night which was well worth having. The seals in the morning were very active having breakfast on last morning there were 7, when I took a dip they had disappeared. I really enjoyed my stay and will return if I can convince husband to endure the drive there which to me was worth it.
