Castle Hotel Dublin review. I stayed one night at the Castle Hotel. A great location, staff were lovely and chatty and were very helpful. A few observations.- I had a double room to myself, spotlessly clean, reasonably spacious. There was a fan provided but the windows were a bit high, Victorian Asylum style, so had to climb on the furniture to open the window. It overlooked the car park so there was little noise. The noise that was came from within, endless squeaking floor-boards in the corridor outside and the floor above which is part of the character of a mature building. In the bathroom there were no flannels, no tissues, no towel rail and no surface for personal items so like a student flat, I had to keep all toiletries on the floor, just as well it was clean. I could have done with a third hand in the shower as the shower-head holder was broken and the shower kept slipping downward to my navel. The water was warm rather than hot. The bathroom sink was chipped and the plumbing to the sink on display even though they went to the bother of putting in a casing for it. Using the loo roll required advance planning as the loo-paper holder was some distance away so if traveling without a Groom of the Stool, have a roll to hand. There were two dining areas for breakfast, one for the cooked Irish and another for Continental. I had the latter. Breakfast fare was the usual and plenty of it. There was no one there to do meet and greet so had to fend for myself. It was busy and chaotic, I didn’t know what I was doing but when I spoke to the lovely staff I found it reassuring they didn’t know what they were doing either. The space was badly laid out, the pace was lively with people tripping over each other or trying to work around each other to get their food. The atmosphere was not unlike that of a posh nursing home with the staff having gone off duty. Just at the entrance to the dining area was a loo with an open door and open loo-lid so immediacy would be well catered for. At checkout I wasn’t asked anything about the stay or for any feedback so maybe The Castle has achieved its own level of excellence. Rating - pleasant staff, comfortable gentleman’s club atmosphere, certainly a Three Star, Four star would be an aspiration.
