Melrose Guest House

there was no heating, and on one of the worst Junes I've known, the house was freezing. As the owner didn't live on site the door was left open. The TV lounge was locked and was being used as a storeroom. so it was impossible for my party of 4 to sit together as the bedrooms had 1 chair only and that was squeezed in. The onsuite was so small I couldn't bend to wash my feet in the shower and had to go sideways past the sink to use the lavatory. As we walked in past the tables and chairs at the front of the house, we should have known then with all the miss-matched furniture something was amiss, the owner is trying to run a business while doing renovations I believe, finally on the last day of our stay he supplied fan heaters for the rooms. as for the area, a local told me it was the worst in douglas and she thought all the guest houses had shut down there

We stayed six nights at Melrose Guest House in mid-August and found it very clean, with a comfortable bed, generous cooked breakfasts plus cereal and good strong coffee. Our host Peter was extremely helpful with food & Wifi requests and with our questions about the island and its places of interest. We booked only a week or two in advance so didn't get a sea view but the shower more than made up for this. It proved to be an excellent good base to explore Douglas and the island: 5 mins walk from the Manx Museum, 10 mins to the bus station, and 15-20 mins walk from the ferry terminal.
