Nestled in the tranquil mountains above Ravelo and the Amalfi coast, Hotel Scapolatiello whispered to us the decadence of a bygone era, while exuding every inch chic vintage charm. Round every corner of this lovely gem of a hotel was a new delight. The abundance of butterflies, the chysantheums, the Serin swallow-like birds who would occasionally swoop and take sips from the deliciously cool pool. Nothing was too much trouble for the fantastic, friendly staff. From the pool boy getting our sun longers and complimentary towels, the waiters at breakfast and reception staff. Breakfast on the terrace a highlight. Try the pizza in the restaurant 150m away. Yummy and only 4 Euros a pop.

Hotel Scapolatiello is quite unique, created by a family in 1821 and currently run by the 5th generation of the same family. It is in a fantastic location in forested mountains above Salerno with majestic views. The rambling building has several terraces with lots of flowers and it is a soothing and pleasing experience to sip a cocktail provided by the friendly and obliging barman, Antonio, to relax, and just gaze at the natural beauty all around. We found the staff to be helpful and smiling and felt we were being well taken care of. A special mention also to the head waiter Abel, who went out of his way to ensure everything was to our liking. There is a nicely laid out and good sized swimming pool with ample deckchairs and towels and a small bar. The restaurant is slightly old-fashioned, with a relatively short but decent menu, in addition to which there were always specials such as sea bream, sea bass, lobster, spaghetti with utterly delicious tomatoes, and steak. The wine list is extensive and affordable. All in all, we loved being there and it was a lovely experience. On one night singers from the Conservatoire at Salerno gave an impromptu performance in the lounge area, which was magical. The only excursion arranged for us by the hotel was a trip along the beautiful Amalfi coast in a motor launch with another couple, with a one hour stop in Amalfi and a longer one for lunch in Positano. Ten minutes walk through the town’s winding streets takes you to the unexpected Abbazia della Santissima Trinita, a monastery fronted by a huge baroque church. A prearranged tour takes you through medieval and ancient cloisters and catacombs, all under an immense overhanging cliff face.

Received food poisoning on my third day here. I can no longer eat eggs, so I’m certain it was the scrambled eggs. No one else appeared to have eaten the eggs as the tray was full when I went down to breakfast and was one of the last down. The eggs had been left with the lid off, for how long I do not know. The hotel have stated I must have got this elsewhere however, I only ate at the hotel. They have not shown any empathy for the fact I was ill at all and ignored my message initially, this is typical for this hotel. Genuinely no idea how this has four stars. First the staff are incredibly rude and dismissive. This is right across the board we only found one cleaner to be lovely. Found the staff to be prejudiced they were more attentive to those who look like they have money. Ignore others to accommodate this. I experienced this three times: upon check-in the couple who arrived after me were seen to first. At the “bar/shop” I ordered drinks only for him to serve an American first and even took money out of her hand when she stated she hadn’t checked in and had no euros only dollars. Finally in the restaurant for our evening meal where I was blatantly ignored in preference of a table appearing to have more money. I was never even offered a wine list, I had to ask. The food was poor in comparison to everywhere else we ate during our stay in Italy. It was expensive and portions were pathetic. Bad food. Poor menu choice and bland. Several dishes unavailable. Very poor service There is nowhere comfortable to sit. The photos show lots of seating areas. What is not shown is that there is a stone wall as the back often with a type of dado rail. The seats again are concrete with cushions. All the seats outside had had their pads removed. It is not at all welcoming! Literally long periods where you cannot get anything to eat or drink. A four star hotel should have a 24 hour bar. The bar never opened! We had to go to the coffee shop across the road or via a hatch with dangerous steps to get drinks yet opening times were different each day. I was never given a ticket to sign for my food or drinks just asked for my room number. Was overcharged and extra drink put on my tab. The decor is dated and drab, it is in no way antique Italian. They have attempted some form of shabby chic but just got the shabby. The furniture is all retro English tat, we know this as my mother and I have over 50 years experience in antiques combined. Everything needs updating inc electricals such as hairdryer and phone etc. I was not given a twin room as requested and I had messaged privately to ensure it was definitely a twin explaining I am a disabled person and my mother who is 78 can’t sleep if we have to share for fear of hurting me. Instead they put four beds in the room and upon arrival we had to ask to have one of these removed as the room was far too small to accommodate so may beds. Two night spent here, the weather was not good so eating outside and use of the pool were not possible. Perhaps this rather impacted our impression. The room was good and clean. The atmosphere in the hotel we found to be a bit dour, dark and lifeless. The food in the evening was okay but no more. Lovely views from the hotel.

Hardly 4 star - postage stamp bathroom, flimsy plastic "glasses," desk covered in grime, not even a facecloth - need I go on? Maybe 2 stars? Might seem like a bargain at the listed prices, but not so much. We are traveling with a small group and the operator booked the hotel, promising a 4 star experience, and we will be letting the tour operator know our experience to be sure.

I was thrilled to begin our hiking holiday (only two nights) at this lovely hotel. We did have transportation from the Salerno train station so did not have to navigate the winding & very narrow streets ourselves. The room was spacious & clean, looking over the little town square where kids were playing soccer. The food was exceptional, the pool lovely, the surroundings beautiful, and Antonio at the little bar/gelateria was charming & offered a generous pour of delicious local white wine. The beauty of the hotel cannot be adequately described, gardens, terraces, more gardens, & an incredible hilltop view.
