Swell Motel

I love cute, kitschy, little beach motels. I’ve been wanting to stay at Swell for ages so I decided to book a long weekend for my wedding anniversary. It was ADORABLE, and very comfortable! The room was clean, well furnished, and had everything I needed to spend a weekend laying by the ocean. They had a live band play in the parking lot over the weekend! The check in lady was very friendly as were her cute office cats. I’m glad I finally got to stay here!

Beachy themed rooms. Nice staff. Lots of stuff to do/use such as cornhole, horseshoes, grill, kayak launch, fish cleaning station, pedal boats. Good location to go see the Cape Hatteras lighthouse which is currently surrounded by 200 feet high scaffolding.

I am very picky about where I stay so I was reluctant at first since it is an older hotel but I was pleasantly surprised! One of the nicest rooms I have stayed in and a 100% sanitation grade! Staff was very nice! We will definitely be back to stay again!

I always have an excellent experience at Swell Motel. The owner and staff are always welcoming and make you feel at home. The rooms are spacious, spotless and comfortable. The Swell Motel is within walking distance of eateries, the beach, and shopping. This year, I was able to enjoy live music on site with my friends. I took advantage of the outdoor cooking and eating area too. I look forward to going back again and recommend Swell Motel to anyone visiting Buxton (Hatteras Island).

I spent four nights at Swell Motel and was very satisfied with my visit. My room was clean, quiet and comfortable. Air Conditioner was a bit noisy, but glad to have due to warm humid weather..Nice HDTV with local Spectrum cable channels as well as free Netflix and numerous apps. Nice clean pool and comfortably warm. Very family friendly with lots of playground equipment as well as numerous tables and outdoor recreation equipment, even BBQ grills there for use. Easy walk to nearby restaurants, and just a mile from Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and campground. Looking forward to a visit there off-season. Buxton is a nice area of Cape Hatteras, an hour south of the touristy and crowded Kitty Hawk and Nags Head portion of the Outer Banks. Very friendly staff. Nice gift shop attached with cool local artworks.

Everything was very clean. Rooms were recently renovated and filled with many thoughtful touches. They have kayaks and bikes to use as well as gas grills. Staff was really helpful and friendly. Pool was large and clean with many toys for the kids. Quiet and relaxing place to stay. Highly recommended!!

The Swell Motel is a lot like Buxton itself, a little gritty but beautiful and friendly at the same time. This is a 60’s-style motel that is under renovation with a friendly staff and a lot of uncommon amenities catering to the fishing crowd. There are fire pits, a couple of outdoor kitchens, fish-cleaning stations, air station, bikes and kayaks for your use.. probably more that I can’t remember. Pool looked inviting…. The room itself was very clean with a new floor and fresh paint. Bathroom was functional and clean, but obviously in need of renovation. Room was quite big in fact. Beds were comfortable. Frankly, the highlight of the room were the two stunning pictures of sea turtles on the wall. Be prepared though… renovations are ongoing… although I saw no work being completed while I was there, some rooms are stripped down to the studs with construction debris in front of the open doors. There is an old trailer in the middle of the property to store construction materials. The place is a work-in-progress. While the atmosphere wasn’t great, if you’re looking for a reasonable priced place to stay and/or planning to cook up your catch at the end of the day and sit around a fire pit and listen to live music, I would definitely give the Swell Motel a try. This is obviously a labor of love for the owners.

My wife and I truly enjoyed our stay. The owner and staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room was cozy and allowed for a quiet stay. We found ourselves hanging out by the pool relaxing and the live entertainment to end the night was awesome. We plan to make going here a regular thing and look forward to our next stay there. We highly recommend to anyone wanting a little time away.

Hotel itself wasn't bad, but the Interactions with staff left much to be desired. I'm glad my company paid for my stay as 3 miscellaneous charges were added to the bill including a smoking charge as my 3year mark for quitting was last week this made we even more aggravated with the situation. Would not recommend unless desperately in need of place for the night
