Lofoten has always been at the top of my to do list and surfing was a big motivating factor. My girlfriend and I decided to do it in style and booked the penthouse suite at Unstad Arctic Surf which is expensive but definitely worth it. SUITE It has a large and very comfortable bed that overlooks the horizon towards the beach, there is a kitchen with everything you need to make your own food, a large fridge and a microwave. Just bring your own cooking oil, sauce etc. The bathroom is large with a black toilet (that was a first) and a nice shower. The water pressure can be a little unreliable though. The suite has its own jacuzzi and sauna and we spent each night using these. Sometimes we would also play cards and have some wine while looking out at the mountains. The location is about 200 metres from the beach and there are faming houses in front of it – so it is not directly on the beach. This did not bother us at all, the views are simply awesome. The sunsets over Unstad, so you get awesome views at night. We did not have any problems with mosquitos at night, just the occasional flies. We didnt eat there as we made our own food, but the menu looked great and prices were reasonable. We did try the Cinnamon buns which were very good and are so big, they are a meal in itself. Do not eat one before dinner as you will be full! STAFF The staff are very helpful and friendly. It is a typical surfing type of location and vibe where people are relaxed and who are there to enjoy themselves. One staff member in particular was awesome, his name is Sverre. We were greeted by him when we first arrived and he went out of his way to help us with whatever we needed. Gave us some great tips on what to do in the area, surfing locations and activity tips based on what he had experienced. He really made us feel at home. SURF UAS offer surfing lessons and equipment hire, but it is Norway, so the prices are high. Expect a board and wetsuit to set you back about 1100 kroner. Surf lessons are 1500 kroner. The short boards they have are Firewire – one of my boards is also a Firewire, so it was perfect for me. I believe they use these as Firewires are traditionally thicker than other boards and float well in the Arctic waters. The wetsuits have built in hoodies and they have gloves and booties that are included. The longboards are mostly beginners but they have a couple of proper ones as well. The surf was flat for three days but the swell picked up on the fourth and it was awesome. There is a fast left, a middle section for beginners and a fast right. I surfed the right which works on a mid to low tide and is fast and fun with a nice long wall. It was pretty crowded as it was the best day of the week, but its ok. There is zero attitude in the water. The water wasn’t as cold as expected and I could have easily not used booties or a hoodie, in fact a spring suit could have done the job on that day. I wouldn’t recommend the right for beginners as its fast on a shall
