We turned up to a deserted building. I only got in by tail gating another guest. I searched all around for a staff member and finally after shouting and banging did someone appear. He said he was the manager and checked us in. Once we got to our room, which was small and not particularly clean, my teenage daughter started her period (sorry if this it TMI but this is where my experience of this place went rapidly downhill). It wasn’t expected so we weren’t prepared (it happens before anyone says otherwise). I scanned the QR code in the room for the hotel guide to see if there were details of either the hotel having provisions or nearby shops (by the way, this was a one night stop before our ferry from Calais the next morning so weren’t familiar from area having spent all day travelling from Normandy). In the hotel guide it clearly stated they carried, amongst other things, sanitary products. So off I go to reception. Again, it’s deserted. I bang, knock on the glass partition between the reception and the permanently closed bar and eventually the manager reappeared. My french isn’t amazing but I know a bit, his English was no better. I pulled up the French version of the room guide to show him to help matters but this didn’t seem to help. I used the word sanitary towel - this didn’t work. He kept offering me bath towels. Eventually I pulled up a picture on my phone of a packet of Always… at this he laughed in my face and asked why I would think he would have those. I point to the room guide again. He laughs. There on in continues a patronising 2 minutes of him, a man, being shocked and stunned at being asked such a thing. In broken french I asked him to have it removed from the room guide. And we then went on the hunt for sanitary products at 8pm on a Saturday night in Bethune. I wouldn’t stay in this hotel again. The bathroom was grubby (soap scum, etc, all around the shower, cracked tiles) the bedroom was snug (I couldn’t have the window open AND get in and out of bed as it opened inwards) and it all felt generally unclean. But aside from basic hygiene, the attitude of the manager was rude and unnecessary. His final words to us when we initially checked in were ‘if you need anything, you only have to ask’ turns out that wasn’t the case was it!
