Disappointing Stay at Grand Hyatt Beijing – Mixed Experience with Room Quality and Service
My two-night stay at the Grand Hyatt Beijing at Oriental Plaza began with significant disappointment regarding the room’s quality and size. The room, which was supposed to accommodate one king-size bed and one single bed, felt cramped—almost like being inside a box. The furniture was outdated, and the entire room had a musty, aged smell. We were thoroughly unimpressed by its appearance.
To make matters worse, upon check-in, the room didn’t even have a single bed as promised—just a small couch. When we returned to the reception to address the issue, the two staff members, Alan and Elsa, seemed visibly annoyed by our concerns. Alan stopped engaging with us altogether, responding with an angry huff while typing aggressively on his computer. The other staff member, Elsa, struggled to communicate in English, making the situation even more frustrating.
We requested a room with two single beds, as we didn’t want our child sleeping on the small portable bed they offered. Given the poor initial experience, we decided to cancel our second night. However, the staff then called over their colleague, Yulia, who was far more professional and polite. She resolved the issue by upgrading us to an apartment-style room.
That said, this was my first time encountering such outdated and cramped facilities in a five-star hotel. The room felt more like a budget guesthouse than a luxury accommodation, especially considering the high price—comparable to what I’d pay at the Four Seasons, Shangri-La, or Ritz-Carlton.
Fortunately, after Yulia stepped in, our stay improved. The apartment was much better, and we were able to enjoy the rest of our time there. On a positive note, the breakfast and restaurant offerings were good, with a wide variety of options, and the room service provided decent value for the price.
Would I stay here again? I’m not sure. While Yulia’s professionalism salvaged the experience, the initial issues with room quality and staff attitude were significant drawbacks.
