Deluxe Penthouse, 1 King Bed, Mountain View, Garden Area
My husband and I stayed in the castle for two nights. Our experience was wonderful! This place is full of history in every corner , I couldn’t believe I was reading my book in the great hall where Lady Ann Clifford used to walk. Our room had 17th century beds as well as tapestries! Of course it has uneven floors and old features, but it is the charmed of this place. You are not buying a luxury stay, you are buying the experience of staying in a real medieval castle. We have stayed in other castles in the past , but this one is definitely the most authentic one. The food was very good , the staff very friendly, Craig in the restaurant/bar was great. We also highly recommend to visit the Norman tower , it is a very interesting museum where you learn more about the history of the castle. The owner of the hotel , Sally is wonderful! Full of energy and a great hostess. We really enjoyed our chats with her and we wish her all the best! We recommend this charming place if you want to be back in history!

Spending New Year's Eve was a huge step out of the ordinary for us. However, having an overnight babysitter galvanised us into going out out. We decided upon a stay and NYE gala meal and entertainment at Appleby Castle. Our approach to the castle blew us away. The ancient Norman Keep dominating the view. A super friendly check-in and tour to our room. A glorious four poster room with en suite and tapestries. We were allowed to poke around and enjoy the secrets of the castle, which was really fun. The food was incredible, and the piper/ piano accompaniment delightful. The ensuing truly retro disco was fabulous. The surroundings and hosts mean this is a truly special place to visit. It is clear that sharing their historic home is important to them, and my husband particularly enjoyed his trip to the top (102 steps of spiral staircase) of the Norman keep. We can't wait to return.

We stayed on a lovely big room in the actual castle with a 4 poster bed. The room had everything we needed. The building was amazing and we spent some time looking around. The staff and the owner were very attentive, knowledgeable, and efficient. We had a lovely breakfast in the morning. We will be back to try another room and to have dinner in the fabulous dining room.

Amazingly historical place, a chance to feel how people lived here before. We stayed at the State Room, which has 2 double beds. It was adequate for a family of 4. The floor was crooked, maybe normal for the age of the building. Cleanliness was acceptable. The toilet did not have enough hand soap, like a couple of milliliters at the bottom of the bottle. Breakfast was good, which we paid for at the time of the booking already. The waitress who served us breakfast was so friendly and professional, kudos to her. There was no TV in the room, which we didn’t need for one night. It is a once-in-a-lifetime stay for us. I guess the building needs some restoration but it should be too costly, I assume.

If you are looking for a 4* hotel Appleby Castle is not for you but if you are looking for an authentic experience in a Norman Castle this is for you! The castle is dark with sloping floors, antique wooden furniture, doors that don’t fit, can feel cold, water may not get hot for five minutes running it, staff are few, heating may come on or may not. But this is a castle experience so take it for what it offers you. The chance to sleep in a castle! Even the owner Sally Nightingale likened it to Fawlty Towers. But it is an unforgettable experience. Our bed was comfy and the shower was hot. The food is ok, although they had run out of quite a few items on the menu when we were there. Breakfast was ok but on our second morning there was no bacon in the full breakfast. There are no draught beers just cans of Stella (very expensive) and very little choice of wines. Apart from all that, the experience of staying in a castle was what we went for and that is what we got. Another ✔️ off the bucket list!

We booked and paid on line to visit this castle . When we arrived we were instructed to phone a number and we would be met for our tour. We called the number and a gentleman said he would come and find us - no one arrived. We phoned again 20 minutes later - again no one arrived. We walked up to the castle and a random man let us in and disappeared leaving us alone in the castle keep with no instructions. Very disappointing and a waste of £40.

Creeky floors, dirty walls, uneven furniture, big gaps under doors, no tv. Wardrobe door is an hazard in the fact that the door protrudes out at the bottom by about 2 inches and is a trip danger. No creature comforts and only one little chair to sit on. Whole room is unsightly. Shame the price doesn't represent the age of the building in its current condition. 10 pm curfew otherwise you have to phone for access. More like a hostel than a 4 star hotel 🏨

My husband and I had such a lovely time at Appleby castle. The grounds were beautiful and the castle and keep were just breathtaking. Sally Nightingale, the owner, was a breath of fresh air and so kind to us. We stayed in the Clifford room and it really took us back in time. The bed was very comfortable. I did read some of the other reviews, and I would caution people to remember that this is a historic site and isn't brand new..yes the floors creek, yes the doors may have a little gap, and yes it doesn't have all the modern amenities, but this place this is a treasure! I would absolutely stay here again, it was an experience I will remember for the rest of my life!!

Wow, we just loved this place! This is not a run-of-the-mill hotel chain. It is a quirky, rustic, wonderfully historic and completely unique place to stay. The lovely Peter looked after us on arrival and we opted for a room upgrade to the ‘Evidence’ room, a four poster, high ceiling and very original castle-like room. Just fabulous. This castle is a little shabby around the edges but this really and truthfully adds to the charm. Dinner in the great hall was an experience not to miss. With all the grandeur of the wood panelled room, roaring fire and the piano playing from Peter, added to the perfect service and exceptional food. A night to remember! Thank you so much. Hope to return very soon.

We booked for one night on 22nd March 2025 but would not recommended anyone staying here, from start to finish they seemed to be winging it, our room was fully on the tilt with a 1-3inch gap round our door, you could see feet going past on the corridor. We paid £120 for the nights bed and breakfast. We also booked for dinner which tasted ok but their was very little of it and the salt and pepper were in a bowl to just pinch it out, no idea how many fingers have been in it before. In the morning 1 bowl of sugar was passed round all the tables with a wet teaspoon in it to use. I know you don't go for a TV but their were none in the rooms or a mirror to use when getting ready. Certainly not worth the money. The service, lighting throughout, and cleanliness leave an awful lot to be desired. Also you will not get in prior to 3pm check in and the door is locked at all times so if you go out prepare to wait to get back in.

I wrote a review & was threatened with legal action by Peter Bass & Sally Nightingale because they didn't like my opinion. I thought this is what this site was all about? To write about the experience & give people the truth before parting with their cash? Avoid this place & hosts - there are plenty of other quirky hotels around hosted by professionals

The whole castle experience was quirky & quite surreal to be honest! Our room was fine. Clean bedding & towels so all good there. No menu for drinks & on check out, we were charged £40.00 for 2 cans of lager (no other choice for beer) & 2 glasses of Prosecco. 3 course dinner was lovely, as was breakfast. Now, here is where we had our issues..... The castle is owned/run by Basil & Sybil & Manuel the chef. Manuel is also the checker-inner & the checker-outer & all round dogsbody from what we could see. We went into the town for a couple of drinks in the afternoon & spoke to a few locals who felt sorry for Manuel. We felt sorry for Manuel so much so, we gave him a £20.00 tip when we checked out & thanked him for looking after us. On the way home following our stay in the castle, we received a telephone call from Basil & Sybil who asked if we had told the locals Manuel was being bullied by them!! Absolutely surreal!!! It left us feeling bullied & very uncomfortable! Basil & Sybil then asked us to leave a review & mention the fact that Manuel (Craig) is not bullied by Basil (Peter) & Sybil (Sally) Anyway, here's the review.
