So disappointing. We reserved a couple of nights at Cameron House as part of a trip to Scotland for our anniversary. The location is lovely, but it was nowhere near a 5 star stay for us. The room was fine, but it was not clear on booking that it was in the charmless modern wing. I’ve stayed in convention hotels with more charm and for a lot less money. But the truly disappointing part was the service, which was just lackluster in a baffling way. Our room was not cleaned even after three requests (hang tag on door while we were out all day, a call to housekeeping and a trip to the front desk in person). The front desk staff didn’t know about basic amenities, like booking kayaks. They didn’t give us the AmEx credit we were supposed to get and were downright rude when we asked about it at checkout. Asking anybody a question seemed to make them glitch, they would just kind of stare off into the distance and then go off to “find out” and never come back. It happened several times, it was so weird! Breakfast was pretty good and we did enjoy afternoon tea, but canceled our reservation at the Italian restaurant (forget the name, it’s the one down by the marina) when they wouldn’t let us bring a bottle of wine we needed to drink before leaving the country. Instead we got room service, which was honestly the worst meal we had in the country. Disgusting sandwich (picture attached) with so much mayo that I scraped probably 1/4 cup off it and inedibly salty soup. Bizarre. The whole experience was just so odd, it was definitely the lowlight of our entire two-week trip, which was otherwise amazing.
